Whew! What a ride. The last month has been overwhelming. I can’t put into words how much your visits, messages, pictures, and more have meant to us.

Saturday, March 23rd is our last day. We look forward to seeing you if you can stop by.

Really, all I can say is thank you. Thank you for supporting Rainbow Records through thick and thin. There were years when we didn’t know if the store could survive, and you saw us through. As many of you have said, I’m thankful the store is closing on our terms. Not from a lack of people loving music and Rainbow Records but because it’s time for the next phase of life.

I’ve been thinking about the movie, Almost Famous, when Lester Bangs, played by the singular Phillip Seymour Hoffman, says “Music, You Know, True Music – Not Just Rock and Roll – It Chooses You.” It’s true. We’re all connected by one thing. Our passion for music. No matter what style, it chooses you and it endures. Always.

Long live music and long live Rainbow Records!

Mark

As most of you know, I’m a huge Beatles fan. They’ve been a major part of my life and seem to be something of a pillar of change. They appear when change is coming.

Now is one of those times.

Rainbow Records opened in 1981. As I reflect over the last 43 years, my thoughts go to the song that ended an era. In The End McCartney sings, “An in the end. The love you take. Is equal to the love you make.” Well, the end is here for Rainbow Records, and all I feel is love and gratitude for this community which made this little record store something special in the Upstate.

I’m planning to close the doors on this chapter of my life on Saturday, March 23rd.

I look forward to seeing everyone over the next month to share stories, laughs, and probably some tears. It all starts with a deep devotion to music. We love it and it shapes who we are. The music business has drastically changed in the last 43 years. We started with vinyl, to cd’s and tapes, to the downloading/streaming that about took us all out, to the rebirth to vinyl again. Talk about full circle!

To end this post, I’d like to send out some much-needed messages of thanks. Firstly, to my wife Lou Ann, we started this together, and I couldn’t have done it without you. You are the rock that all businesses must have to thrive. To my daughter, Megan Hembree Morlok, it was a joy watching you grow up at Rainbow Records, and I’m beyond thankful that you love music as much as I do. To my granddaughters, who are one the main reasons I’m so looking forward to retiring! To my family that has always been supportive of this crazy dream. To all the past employees of Rainbow Records who made this place so exceptional and fun, to a past & present employee and friend, Rodney Rigsby, who I couldn’t have done the last 3 years without, and finally to you, our customers.

You have made this an adventure of a lifetime.

Look forward to seeing you,
Mark

Three months after the release of their classic album Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots, the Flaming Lips played a small show at The Paradise Lounge in Boston for the local alternative radio station WBOS. The small crowd of competition winners and invited fans were treated to a 40 minute set that included “Do You Realize??” and “Fight Test”, plus covers of Pink Floyd’s “Lucifer Sam” and Beck’s “The Golden Age”. One feature of this show were the song intros by Wayne Coyne.

This is the first release on vinyl and it’s on limited edition pink!

The Doors Live in Bakersfield is one of the more unique shows from The Doors during a tumultuous 1970 when Jim Morrison was on trial on trumped-up charges in Miami. The band had been playing together live for five years, and were tight enough to be able to veer into the unknown. That’s what they opted for in this California agriculture town on a hot summer night. Featuring improvisations and medleys of The Doors many beloved hits from across their albums, Live in Bakersfield is a shamanic adventure for all who listen. Recorded August 21, 1970.

Todd Whitener, Jesse Vest, and Matt Taul got fired from Days of the New, but they had the last laugh, forming Ta***ic and recording this self-titled, Gold-selling album in 2001 for Madonna's Maverick label with producer Toby Wright (Alice in Chains, Metallica, Korn) at the controls.

Never-before-released on vinyl, this acoustic-tinged, grunge/nu-metal classic emerges here in an orange vinyl pressing inside a jacket with inner sleeve. Limited to 1500 copies worldwide.
