Broken glass spends decades tumbling and becomes sea glass. The ocean smoothes what once was sharp, and bright colors eventually frost as a measure of both time and journey...from Trash to Treasure, shaped by the ocean and washed ashore for maybe only moments before being buried by rocks and shells and other remnants of the sea.

In the Pacific Northwest, from the house on the bay that opens to the Pacific via San Juan Islands, I collect trash turned into treasure after years of surviving the ocean without breaking. Sea glass is now sought globally, so it has has diminished in quantity over the past decades. But some shores stay hidden longer than others, and all of these treasures come from this shore.

In 1992, just a few days after Thanksgiving, an explosion at the old plywood mill started a fire that burned for hours, causing all electric to get shut off for the city of Anacortes and all the San Juan Islands. Built in 1939, the mill on Fidalgo Bay had served as an integral part of the Anacortes economy for decades. Thirty years later, remnants from the fire like this aptly-named “BURN” relic sometimes still wash ashore.
