Weaned our last set of calves this week and moved them to the neighborhood feedlot. Preg checked all the momma cows and gave them their winter treatments. Thanks to our Beef Herdsman, Travis Van Laar, for all his hard work, for coordinating help from the local cowboys, and thanks to the Hilltop Vet Clinic for their efficient expertise. That's a wrap.

May 1. In recognition of Iowa’s Soil and Conservation Week, I tried to capture the growth of our cover crops that were drilled on October 30 after corn and soybeans were harvested, (See my post from October 30), but it’s hard to capture over 160 acres in one photo. However, this will provide support that our cover crop of winter wheat was very successful! I’ve never seen this part of the farm look so green! This crop will be terminated when we plant corn and soybeans this spring, but in the meantime, it is helping to prevent erosion of the soils, while at the same time keeping the nutrients out of the water and in place to support this year’s crops. They also improve soil health by adding additional organic matter to the soil. Please recognize Iowa farmer’s and rancher’s efforts that have grown cover crop usage - to protect Iowa’s water quality - from 200,000 acres 10 years ago to 3.5 million acres last year. That’s fantastic progress!

Here’s 1 of our 15 “ponds” on our farms. The ponds are built in draws and ravines as “erosion control structures”, helping to keep our soils on the farm. We pipe out the ponds so that cattle tanks placed below the ponds are filled by gravity. Recycling rainwater this way allows us to pump zero water or to use any rural water for our cattle operation. Dual purpose, right? Oh yeah, then about 20 years ago we stocked some of the ponds with bass, catfish, crappie, and bluegill for recreational fishing. Triple purpose ponds! And on March 26, I tested to see if the crappie were biting. Yes, they were - and the bass too! What a blast!

We lost our Dad 10 years ago today. He had a sincere love for people, in good times and bad, always wanting to make them laugh. He also had a kind and caring heart for any kind of farm animal and always cared for their well being. This photo was taken of Dad and I about 20 years ago on our southern Iowa ranch. He was so supportive of this ‘adventure’ of ours. I think of him often, especially when we are doing farm work and caring for our cattle. He is greatly missed.

We hired our neighbor to custom drill winter wheat on our harvested soybean and corn ground this year as a cover crop. We’ve typically aerial applied the seed in standing corn, but just too dry this year. Cover crop will improve water quality, add organic matter and improve soil health. An added bonus would be enough growth next spring to harvest the crop by baling it “green” for cattle feed. A big thank you to the Kessel’s for getting this done just before a nice big rain. Stand by for results next spring.

A special Thank You to Brian and Mindy Oswald (High Point Bulls) for hosting Brett & Olivia and Linda & me at their September 8 customer appreciation event. We enjoyed some awesome slow smoked prime rib with all the fixin’s and a great Blues Band entertained us all evening. What a great time! A special congratulations on their new “Certified Angus Beef” endorsement and barn branding. Quite an honor for them! We’ve been buying bulls from High Point for 10 years, and our own herd continues to improve because of their high quality genetics. Great people and great bulls!

It’s National Pollinators Week! US’s most common and most important pollinator is the Honey Bee. They play a huge role in our food supply and ecosystem. And we love their honey! 😊

Our ranch in Southern Iowa has some great soils for growing corn and soybeans and some more fragile soils. Because of that, we grow grass on 80% of the ranch to protect and strengthen the lower quality soils, keep the water clean, support wildlife, and benefit the environment overall. The most efficient and environmentally sound way to harvest the grass is with beef cows. During the summer and fall (May - October) we use a rotational grazing system whereby our six different groups of cows have at least four pastures each where they graze a short time then move to the next pasture on a constant rotation. So, pastures get utilized for about 25% of the time in total and only for short periods so that 75% of the time the pasture rests and regrows. That’s sustainable agriculture. Pictures taken on June 13 show cows moving into fresh pastures for the first time this summer.

Happy May Beef Month! Congratulations to this year’s winner of Iowa’s Best Burger Contest. The third year in a row for the winner’s burger to be a “smash burger”. If you haven’t already done so, you gotta try ‘em. Thanks to the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association and the Iowa Beef Industry Council for drawing attention to this great product.
