This project has had a few unique challenges that have been fun (and tedious at times) to address.

I bought this piece of juniper from AP Sawmill in Flagstaff, AZ. As you can see, it had a large bark inclusion on one end and many small surface cracks throughout the piece. My client wanted to preserve the bark if at all possible and as I started looking at it to determine the best way to stabilize the bark, I discovered quite a bit of rot around the bark. After digging out the rot, which created a large hole, it was obvious that I would have to fill the hole with resin. The resin worked well to fill the hole and to also stabilize the bark. All the small cracks I filled with black superglue.

My client also wanted this board to sit up off the table just a little so I used the cutoff end to create these slightly curved legs. Once those were attached, I ensured the piece didn’t wobble.

The final challenge was the two cut ends. As you can see, the live edge and previously cut edges are all weathered. After cutting the board to length, I treated the freshly cut edges with a steel wool and vinegar solution to give an aged look that matches very well.

Stay tuned for a finish video and pictures of the final piece!

Here is a series of charcuterie boards I completed for a local realtor. She requested all darker wood with white or gray resin. At first I wasn’t sure about all the white and gray, but I absolutely love the end result. This is a bunch of fantastic charcuterie boards that her clients will enjoy for many years.
