Marriage is all about compromise. He buys a motorcycle. She buys a sewing machine. Both swear it was a great deal, and neither mentions what the accessories cost.

Which brings me to a certain mystery lady who bought herself a Janome Continental M8 on a whim and figured she’d just sneak that 60-pound box upstairs.

Ma’am. You’re going to need a lookout, a moving crew, and a husband who has never once noticed scratches on the staircase. Here is your training video.

Let this motorcycle-disguised-as-a-lawnmower video inspire you. Throw a tablecloth over that box and tell him you’re bringing up the Christmas decorations.

If he offers to help, the marriage is strong.
If he asks what it cost, suddenly your hearing is weak.

And remember: “This old thing?” works better AFTER you get it out of the box.

Blissful Moments by Riley Blake has arrived at The Knotted Thread! And every lovely bolt needs fat quarters cut.

Sarah, however, may have a different plan. With our 3-yard quilt makers coming tonight, I suspect she’ll be encouraging some very generous fabric purchases.

“Why stop at three yards, don’t you want curtains to match?” —Sarah, probably, hoping the collection sells out before fat quarters get cut.

I suppose I should feel bad that Sarah is working today and has to enter all that new merchandise into the system.

Then I remember how hard she laughed when I discovered the new Adam & Eve store was NOT a Christian bookstore.

Take your time, Sarah. The Lord works in mysterious ways, and today He’s working through inventory.

A whole truckload of Janomes landed at the shop yesterday, and I aged six years watching the driver dangle that pallet over the edge of the lift. Sir, that is NOT a load of paper towels. That is my financial future with decorative stitches.

Once every machine was safely inside, I could finally breathe… until I opened the invoice. Apparently, all that goodness is due in actual dollars. In one payment. Rude.

I’m not saying shop ownership leads to day drinking, but yesterday’s delivery should’ve included a margarita machine.

This week, I learned that a longtime friend had passed away. As young married couples, we camped together, raised our children together, and filled those years with laughter, adventure, and memories that grow more precious with time.

When I heard the news, “Moonshadow” by Cat Stevens was playing on the radio. It felt fitting. In the song, he imagines losing things we can hardly picture living without, yet keeps finding a reason to embrace life. He considers losing his hands, his eyes, his legs, and his ability to speak, but each imagined loss reveals another silver lining: he could still see the world in his mind, still appreciate the beauty around him, still move forward in spirit, and still find ways to express himself. Even the thought of losing his freedom does not erase his sense of wonder; he continues to imagine light, possibility, and joy.

There’s something beautiful about that determination to find meaning, even when life changes in ways we never wanted. And a moonshadow itself means there is light shining, even in the darkness. This morning, that felt like a comforting thought.

Today, there is sadness, but there is also gratitude, for the camping trips, the years of watching our children grow, and the gift of sharing a little of this life together.

Yesterday, I spoke with a lady who shared that she was lonely. After work, she went home with nothing much to look forward to. Her words stayed with me.

I wished she could feel what I get to experience every day at The Knotted Thread: the laughter around a table, someone saving you a seat, the excitement of showing friends something you finally finished. Someone remembering to ask about your family. Someone noticing when you’re missing.

A shared interest gives us a place to begin. “What are you making?” becomes “Let me show you,” and eventually, “Are you coming next week?” To 30 plus years later sharing photos of our youth.

That’s how fabric, yarn, and thread become friendship. We come together to learn a skill or make something beautiful, and along the way, we build a community. We find people who cheer us on, help us through the tricky parts, and give us something to look forward to.

I believe connection is one of the secret ingredients to a long, fulfilling life. We need reasons to get out the door, people to laugh with, and places where we feel we belong.

If you’ve been feeling lonely, consider this your invitation. You don’t have to be an expert. You don’t have to come with a friend. Come curious. Take a class. Pull up a chair.

Friendship often begins with a simple thread.

Hi everyone,

We’re looking forward to stitching with you! There are still a few kits left so sign up quick. Please bring the following supplies and prepare your fabrics before class.

Supplies

* Embroidery thread to coordinate with your kit fabrics, including the specialty fabrics and vinyls. Check your thread stash first! If you’re missing a color, let us know—we may be able to bring extras.
* Extra bobbins.
* Printed project instructions.
* Cutaway mesh stabilizer. Bring enough to use two layers for the owl blocks to support the dense stitching.
* Your embroidery machine, appropriate hoop, and usual embroidery supplies.

Before class

Starch your fabrics with Magic Starch, or apply SF101 woven fusible interfacing for added support. I used SF101 for my project.

Our class goal

We hope to complete one owl block and one sashing piece.
