📖 Book Review: The Calamity Club by Kathryn Stockett ⭐⭐⭐⭐
The Calamity Club is a long, slow-moving story, and for a good portion of the book, it feels like you’re waiting for something to click into place. The pacing is definitely on the slower side, and it takes time to fully understand where the story is going and how all the pieces connect.
But about halfway through, things start to shift.
The story begins to come together in a way that feels intentional, and suddenly the characters, relationships, and underlying tensions carry much more weight. What once felt slow starts to feel layered, and the investment begins to pay off.
If you’re someone who enjoys richly detailed historical fiction and doesn’t mind a gradual build, this book delivers. It has a very similar tone and atmosphere to The Help—focusing on complex relationships, social dynamics, and the kind of storytelling that unfolds quietly but meaningfully over time. Also very similar to Before We Were Yours.
This isn’t a fast-paced, can’t-put-it-down read—but it is one that rewards patience.
⭐️ A great pick for readers who love immersive historical fiction and don’t mind a slow build.
