I’ve never been big fans of commercially made wallets. They seem big, bulky, and full of excess extras (zippers for example) that tend to break and tear. After years of using wallets that just didn’t seem practical I decided to just make my own. The simple, yet efficient design kept the excess bulk away and my hand done stitching held up better. As a handmade leather wallet wears it takes on character of it’s own and truly becomes personalized. Each wallet I make is unique and made with practicality and natural aesthetic in mind.

Thebes point made from a spall of Novaculite. This was one of the most important and largest exploited sources of lithium material in ancient America. For good reason too, it’s easy to knap and comes in a wide range of colors.

Braintanning is one of the oldest methods for preserving animal skin. Transforming it from raw unusable state that would rot into a beautiful, soft, tanned material. It’s ideal for clothes, moccasins, bags, pouches, quivers, purses, journals, etc. During the 18th and 19th centuries it was a highly valued commodity that was an important source of revenue for the early American economy. The preservation process is an all natural organic method that doesn’t rely on harmful chemicals. Creating it is a physically demanding process where one deer sized skin can take about 20 hours to preserve. This particular pouch is made from deerskin and is hand stitched. It’s just one more way to show respect to the animals you harvest and use every possible part of them.

Sometimes you create something that just flows out of you naturally. It seems as though you are in sync with the rhythms of the energy from that particular medium you are working with. Although still challenging, the creative process in the birthing of your creation seems effortless. This was the case with this beautiful piece of Burlington chert I knapped into a Hopewell point from a biface. It was a lot of fun and will probably be one of my most memorable pieces I’ve knapped.

Look what came in!! Prints of some of my (Keara Harp) favorite paintings, photography, and sketches I have done over the years. The prints are 8x10 and 4x6. All of the photos are matte. The original paintings are all oil on canvas, the sketches were either graphite or ink, and the photograph was taken with Kathleen Klunk’s help at the St. Louis Botanical Gardens in black and white.
