Can we petition for spooky season to start in July?? This Old Town Book(s) Club book will get you in spirit.

Germany, 1618. Plague is spreading. Fear and suspicion are in the air and Katharina Kepler has been accused of being a witch. Katharina is an illiterate widow, known by her neighbors for herbal remedies and the great success of her children, including Johannes who is an Imperial Mathematician and author of the laws of planetary motion. It's enough to make anyone jealous. So when insipid Ursula Reinbold accuses Katharina of offering her a witchy drink that made her ill, Katharina is in trouble. Her scientist son must turn his attention from the music of the spheres to defending his mother.

Everyone Knows Your Mother Is a Witch by Rivka Galchen draws on real historical documents, infusing the story with imagination, sly humor, and intellectual fire. RSVP for the July 25 book club at our events page: oldtownbooks.com/events

Cairo, 1912. Fatma el-Sha'arawi is the youngest woman working for the Ministry of Alchemy, Enchantments and Supernatural Entities. She is certainly no rookie however, having prevented the destruction of the universe the previous summer.

Decades earlier, the prophet al-Jahiz bridged the magical and non-magical realms, forever altering the world before disappearing from the public eye. Now members of a brotherhood dedicated to al-Jahiz's legacy have turn up murdered. When Fatma is called in to investigate, she discovers the perpetrator to be a man of rare magical abilities who claims to be the returned al-Jahiz himself.

RSVP for July 23's Sci Fi & Fantasy Book Club: The Master of Djinn by P. Djèlí Clark here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/158477318927

The Kissing Bug by Daisy Hernández tells the story of how poverty, racism, and public policies have conspired to keep certain diseases like Chagas hidden. Team OTB seems to be hanging out in the romance section quite a bit these days. Here's another great recommendation from Angie!

"Romances make up a big chunk of my summer reads and I'm so happy I kicked off the season with American Dreamer by Adriana Herrera! Nesto moves his food truck from the big apple to upstate NY and meets Jude, a local librarian passionate about book access for youth. Small-town drama, amazing food writing, and loveable, believable characters had me rooting for Jude and Nesto from the very first chapter and craving a Caribbean burrito. Can't wait to read the rest of the series!"

Our super popular Bad Romance Book Club is hosted by BFF duo - Danielle and Kristen. As one of OTB's official romance consultants, Kristen has a steamy recommendation for you!

"I've read Cat Sebastian's A Gentleman Never Keeps Score several times over, and clutch my chest with love for it and its heroes—cinnamon roll pub owner Sam Fox + grumpy droll lonely pocket person Hartley Sedwick—every time. Sam needs to steal some paintings to protect someone he loves, and Hartley lives in the house where Sam needs to conduct his thievery. Hijinks and perfect sweethearts falling in love ensues. The cast of characters is excellent; it's the perfect mix of serious with your sweet, and a bit of sexy paired with warm cozy vibes. Content note: there are some conversations alluding to past sexual abuse (Hartley's); no abuse on page."

Bookstr selects the best five books set in Europe to be published this year.
We really enjoyed storytime this past weekend! Would love it if you made it a regular event 😊
I met Scout today (who snacks next door at the place my wife manages), and was recommended a GREAT book (by a fellow human, not the pup). I hope to finish reading it in time for next weekend’s book club!
Hi! Can you clarify what time Abby Maslin will be at Old Town Books on Saturday, March 30? My friend and I want to go, but we’re not sure whether it starts at 5 or 6:30.
I was so excited to see your shop online the other week I think while the 24in48 was going on..I come to Alexandria for work and am hoping I’ll be able to make it to your store next time I am in town! ☺️☺️
Enjoyed my visit! Made my first purchase and, as a local, I’ll be back again soon!
Yes! Thank you Susan Brock for letting me know!
