ICYMI--this is a terrific story about the Vélocity Bicycle Cooperative in Alexandria. These guys are changing lives over there--because people donated a bike, they refurbished a bike--a kid got to camp, a person could go to their job. READ MORE BELOW.
Just as the giving season begins, Marty DeVine reminds us that giving is good every day of the year.
Vélocity Bicycle Cooperative
Did you know that we have our very own Bicycle Co-op here in Del Ray? Vélocity Bicycle Cooperative is a community based and volunteer run cooperative that is a one stop shop for everything bicycle related that you might need. They offer bicycle and parts recycling, do-it-yourself bike repair, full service bike maintenance, and so much more; and you are always greeted by a friendly, knowledgeable face when you walk through their doors.
I discovered your coop this afternoon. Thank you Steve for your hospitality and the opportunity to learn about your shop. Keep up the great work.
Thanks so much to Bayley Vanderpoel for helping me fix up my and my son's bikes! And right in our neighborhood, too!
Congrats to Vélocity Bicycle Cooperative on 10 YEARS! So grateful for all that you do for the community.
It's Alexandria's Giving Day, and we're spotlighting some of our favorite nonprofits. Now in its 10th year, Vélocity Bicycle Cooperative works to grow and empower a more inclusive biking community through affordability, education, and embracing the fun of riding -- especially in light of the recent need for socially responsible and safe transport options during COVID-19. “The other week I went in for a PET-CT scan to see about taking out my port from my previous bout with cancer, a routine procedure, and they told me, “Unfortunately we’ve found new cancerous bodies in your neck and shoulder,” Christian Myers told The Zebra. City to Host Bike Rodeo at Alexandria’s First Traffic Garden on November 2
Calling all kids! On Saturday, November 2, the City of Alexandria and the Alexandria Bicycle Pedestrian Advisory Committee will host a bike rodeo to celebrate the opening of the City’s first traffic garden. The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Mount Jefferson Park (301 Hume Avenue).
Traffic gardens are miniature towns made up of small-sized streets where children can engage in active learning about roadways and traffic safety. Children practice walking, bicycling, and “driving” along roadways and through intersections and crossings, all in an environment free of motor vehicles.
Last March, the City hosted a community workshop where children were invited to design their own traffic garden. After careful review, City staff combined the work of three neighborhood girls as inspiration for the final design. Special thanks to Lucy, Maisie, and Alli for their design expertise!
At the opening event, kids will be led through a bicycle rodeo course and practice key skills, such as starting and stopping, turning, and using hand signals. Bicycle checks and helmet checks will be provided, and residents can speak with City staff about other exciting Vision Zero initiatives that are underway.
This event is suitable for children ages 4-11. Grownups are also welcome! For more information, contact Christine Mayeur at
