Big news from Heidi and Sandra.
Scandinavian Gift Shop has a new chapter ahead. On June 1st, we will be passing the keys to new ownership, and our hearts are full of gratitude for every single person who has been part of this journey.
Our dedicated staff are staying on. The brands you love are not going anywhere. And the spirit of this store, built right here in downtown Alexandria, will carry forward beautifully.
On June 1st Mindy Joneson will take ownership of Scandinavian Gift Shop - stop in to meet and welcome her! Also, we will be open Memorial Day from 10 to 2pm

May Day is one of those holidays that looks a little different depending on where you are in the world, but the heart of it is the same everywhere: welcome spring, gather your people, and celebrate.

In the USA, the tradition is all about May baskets! Small baskets filled with flowers and sweets, left secretly on a neighbor's doorstep. You knock, you run, and if they catch you, you owe them a kiss. It is charming, sneaky, and very spring.

Cross the Atlantic to Scandinavia, and things get a little louder.
In Sweden and Norway, May 1 is Första Maj and Arbeidernes Dag. A public holiday marked by parades, speeches, music in the parks, and people out in their finest clothes celebrating both the season and the spirit of community.

In Denmark, it is not even an official holiday, but that does not stop anyone. Parks fill up with picnics, live concerts, and the kind of festive energy that says winter is officially over.

And then there is Finland, where May Day (called Vappu) is arguably the most festive of them all. Students flood the streets in colorful overalls covered in patches, wearing white graduation caps, and toasting with sima (a lightly fizzy homemade mead made with lemon and honey). Doughnuts and funnel cakes called tippaleipä round out the celebration, and cities across the country crown their beloved statues with oversized student caps as a nod to the season.

Different traditions, same message: spring is here! Happy May Day!

When a customer mails you a handwritten note, you share it. Lois took her Icebugs to New Zealand and wore them through rainforest terrain, rocky trails, climbing, and city streets. Fifteen-hour days.
