Known for her simple and classic style, Dorothy Thorpe stands as an equal among big name glass designers like Georges Briard and Fred Press. She got her start during the Great Depression when she and her husband, like many, faced seemingly impossible economic obstacles. However, Thorpe persevered and opened a glass designing and sandblasting business that found success despite the turbulence. Originally, Thorpe's designs had her signature DTD logo etched at the bottom of her pieces, but after the company was sold her logo transited to a logo sticker.

You can find a large variety of Dorothy Thorpe's pieces online at The Hour Shop! 😊πŸ₯ƒ

Being a bartender isn't an easy job, but Ada Coleman faced the male dominated industry with kindness and brought joy to her patrons. She served the likes of Mark Twain, Charlie Chaplin, and Prince Wilhelm of Sweden during her time as the head bartender at The Savoy's American Bar in London. One popular story that came out of her career was when Charles Hawtrey asked Coleman to "Give me something with a bit of a punch."

Upon his next visit, Coleman gave Hawtrey a drink with just that and it was soon dubbed the Hanky Panky cocktail. Coleman's Hanky Panky is still served at The Savoy to this day!

Recipe provided from Harry Craddock's The Savoy Cocktail Book:

In a cocktail shaker, pour over ice 1/2-1 1/2 oz. Italian vermouth, 1/2 -1 1/2 oz. dry gin, and 2 dashes Fernet-Branca. Stir and strain into a 4 oz. cocktail glass. Garnish by squeezing an orange peel over the top.

An essential to any bar, corkscrews were invented out of necessity. Getting cork out of glass wine bottles was a struggle until the late 1600s when "steel worms" were used to remedy the issue. It wasn't until 1795, however, that the first patented corkscrew design was eventually granted to Reverend Samuel Henshall. His creation became the essential friend to bartenders and waiters everywhere and is the standard for the bar tool we know today!

We hope you don't struggle opening your wine! For all your cocktail and barware needs shop with us online today. 🍷😊

Bloody Mary's origins, like most cocktails, is murky. Its creation has been credited by several people, but perhaps the most well known among them is Ferdinand "Pete" Petiot! Petiot worked at the famous Harry's New York Bar in Paris in the early 1900s. Later in his career, Petiot claimed that he took what was George Jessel's tomato juice cocktail recipe and created what became the Bloody Mary by altering the measurements and adding ingredients to Jessel's cocktail. Part of the fun of making cocktails at home is continuing to improvise with ingredients that you have on hand. Give it a try and enjoy your own Bloody Mary today (or try the variation below)! πŸ…πŸ˜

Ingredients:
-35 oz. tomato juice
-10 oz. pickling liquid
- 2 oz. fresh lime juice
-half bunch fresh cilantro
- 1 whole fire roasted red pepper
- hot sauce (to taste)
- salt & ground pepper (to taste)
- 1 tsp. sugar
- 2 oz. Milagro tequila

Instructions:
Combine first 9 ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. Pour tequila into an ice-filled collins glass. Fill with Bloody Mary mixture and garnish with fresh horseradish, pickled tomatillo, and a celery stick.

A vintage Manhattan glass is the perfect example of a Nick and Nora glass. Named after the famous couple that Dick Powell and Myrna Loy played in the classic Thin Man series from the 1930s, this glass holds 3 oz. Popular at the time, smaller cocktail glasses held the proper proportions of classic cocktails and ensured that each drink remained cold for every sip. These glasses are still popular today and we've got a lot to choose from!

The Gin and Tonic is a classic cocktail, whose origin dates as far back as the 19th century. When members of the British East India Company were abroad trading, they drank quinine with tonic water to fight off malaria. However, because of drink's bitter taste, they added sugar, lime, and gin to make it go down easier. The drink traveled back to England where it became very popular. Now the gin and tonic cocktail and variations on it can be found in almost any bar around the world!

This variation of a gin and tonic was created by Jason Strich from his days behind the bar at Rasika:

In a cocktail shaker, add 1.5 oz. of gin, a dash of lavender bitters, and ice. Shake and strain into an ice-filled rocks glass. Fill with citrus tonic and garnish with a lemon peel.

To make the citrus tonic: combine 2.5 tsp. quinine bark powder, 4 dried Bird's Eye chilies, 1 roasted Thai chili, 1 tsp. chopped ginger and 1 gallon water. Boil for 15 minutes, then steep for 1 hour. Strain 12 cups of liquid through a cheese cloth. Stir in 1.5 cups of grapefruit juice, 1 cup of lime juice, .5 cup of orange juice, 1 tsp. of yuzu juice, 1.25 cups of sugar plus 2 tbsp., .5 tsp citric acid and .5 tsp. salt. Place in soda siphon and chill.
