So happy to show off this cute little project. Had a request to turn a traditional quilted star into a ceiling medallion, made out of hardwood. Challenge accepted! Using a mixture of hickory and white oak, we precision-cut each diamond on the CNC, applied some variations of Rubio Monocoat colors and a vibrant turquoise paint, and assembled the star onto a backer. Once cut out, and with a quick electrical hole in the middle, made a stunning ceiling medallion above this beautiful brass chandelier. What can Piedmont Woodshop do for you?

The walnut floating shelves are in! Four shelves on each side alcove of a fireplace, along with a custom free-floating mantle, all done in miter-locked rustic walnut, hand sanded, and finished naturally with a satin poly acrylic. The three lower shelves on each side are illuminated with inset custom LED strip lighting, controlled via a Lutron remote and smart home apps. Mounted with Sheppard brackets, each shelf is rated to hold up to 150 lbs! A beautiful addition to this home. What can Piedmont Woodshop do for you?

So here is the latest project through the shop- we converted this old RCA Radiola radio into a cabinet. Very challenging, in terms of maintaining as much of the original patina and style while making clean cuts and mortising in hinges. The original vacuum tubes and speaker were quite amazing, making the shop look a bit more like a mad scientist lab over the past month. Very proud how this came out! While a theme this year has been “cabinetry around a fireplace”, no two builds are the same, and not much will come close to this- white oak cabinets and solid hardwood white oak doors, on a series of three stacked cabinets, over 10’ high, with the center cabinet being a hidden dry bar, complete with pocket doors, door-activated lighting, a full-depth white oak drawer, and a half shelf for plenty of entertaining space. Those other doors on the right? A full copy of the hardwood doors on the left, done in a faux panel, mirror image copy of the cabinets on the left. Finally, the mantle- a massive piece of Douglas fir, felled in the early 1900’s and used as a beam in a row house in DC. Based on the rings that we could see, the tree was 350 years old when it was felled around 1910, meaning it sprouted in the mid 1500’s. An incredible piece of wood, and complementary to all of the woodwork that we did on the cabinetry. What can Piedmont Woodshop do for you?

Rarely do I post about shop tools, but this merits attention. What you see here is a machine called a shaper. It it a larger, more powerful version of a router table, but with a lot more versatility of larger, detailed cutter heads, bits, blades, and knives that can make everything from molding to door frames to square edging on long boards. This particular shaper has an incredible history- it was first used in the 1960’s and ‘70’s to build all of the custom wood trim moulding and framing at Newstead Farm in Upperville. A very good friend gifted this to us over a year ago, and it was in rough shape, having sat idle for the better part of 25 years. We cleaned it all up, re-finished the tabletop, re-wired the power cord, and acquired all of the accessories and cutter necessary to make it functional. Today, we rebuilt and installed the new oak fences, and put it to work. These wood rails and styles will become several oak doors in a matter of a couple days, work that in the past would have taken multiple days to cut on a router table. We are thrilled to not only have such an amazing tool in the shop, but one with a fantastic pedigree of fine woodworking. 80 years old, and runs like a champ!

This has been a long-time coming. We are very proud to present an incredible, one-of-a-kind build. This freestanding walnut bar is 100% hardwood walnut, all from boards that had been sitting for 20+ years in a barn. And when I say it’s 100% walnut, I mean everything- drawer bottoms, doors, trim, bracing, top, uprights- all built by hand and assembled in such a way that apart from the screw heads in the brass bar rail standoffs, not a single other fastener is visible. Finished in a natural ebony and poly top coat, this bar is a testament to old-world craftsmanship, done in a modern build style. This is our latest magnum opus, and we could not be prouder of this monumental build. What can Piedmont Woodshop do for you?

Project 2 for today- this Mudroom / Foyer bench, with inset custom shoe drawers, inset upper cabinets, and a solid winged backboard, all done in Shaker-style with soft-close Blum slides and hinges. The custom fluting on the lower kick is actually a functional floor vent, as we re-directed a wall vent into this lower insulated section of the bench. Finished in Sherwin Willams Neutral Ground, this bench will hold up to needs of a busy family on the go, with plenty of year-round storage. What can Piedmont Woodshop do for you?

Project 1 for today- this wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling built in cabinetry, with fixed upper shelving, mantle, and crown, all done in Shaker-style and finished in Chantilly Lace white. Blum soft-close hinges on all of the overlaid doors, with adjustable shelves in the cabinets. Recessed lighting is controlled from small touch controllers embedded in the top of each counter, and in order to get this in we demo’d and re-dry walled the entire rear wall section on either side of the fireplace. Very happy to show off the latest project- 114 square feet of custom maple tambour panels! Commissioned by a custom home builder, we built these out of solid maple that we milled down into 3/4” square sticks, and then attached to 10-foot long maple quarter ply panels, and installed in such a way that not a single seam is visible anywhere. Finished in a clear matte polyacrylic, these make a stunning visual backdrop for the entryway of the home. What can Piedmont Woodshop do for you?

The first project of 2024! A custom dog bowl stand for a pair of lucky doggos! Made to fit perfectly between the door molding and door plinths, and also to match the existing mudroom cabinetry (which we also had a hand in previously!), with a custom carved, watertight lower paneling and a custom CNC cut top to hold the bowls. For fun, I hand-cut the baseboard reliefs, because why not? With the walnut top sealed in Aquaspar, this will stand up for years and years to kibble slobber and splashing water. As the 2023 year draws to a close, we were thrilled to deliver this fantastic oak table and refreshed base to a client today. The top is a core of 1 5/8” white oak surrounded by a 4”wide quartersawn white oak border, and finished with polyacrylic satin. The base was sanded down and re-painted in our shop, and prepped to receive not only the new top, but some handy electrical and USB plugs as well. This table will last a lifetime, and will be a heirloom piece for future generations. What can Piedmont Woodshop do for you?

While we have produced some incredible projects this year, I believe this may very well be the Magnum Opus piece for Piedmont Woodshop. I present to you, this rustic walnut mantle, made from 57 separate pieces of custom-milled walnut, hand-fitted and assembled, hand-finished with ebony stain and a satin topcoat. This is a hollow cap, sitting on top of an old stone fireplace mantle, breathing new life into this fireplace, just in time for St. Nick to pop in. Occasionally we get a project with a great backstory. In this case, our furry, four-legged client had her couch moved away from her favorite window. Unable to see the potential intruders, cats, and birds at the front door was heartbreaking, so we built a custom raised dog bed, complete with steps, so she can once again survey her front-yard queendom. Yes, it’s been a busy week, and to cap it off, this beautiful cedar outdoor sofa. Custom built not only for the space, but designed to specifically utilize the cushions the client had left over from a previous outdoor couch. This sidelight, pictured here with the door, is a great example of what custom woodworking can do. We received a call from a builder who was in need for a custom-fit sidelight frame that would match and compliment the commercial door and frame. This was done in solid sapele mahogany, milled to exact size to create the glass rabbet, the angled sill plate, the inset top cap, and then we also made the matching brick mold, casement trim, and glass furring to keep the entire build uniform. From beginning to end, this took about a week, and we installed it and the door today for the builder. Need something similar? Several years ago our Woodshop started off as a tech-focused general contracting business; hanging TV’s, installing smart home systems, wiring in-wall speakers,etc. We started doing this work in custom builds, and then the builds became more of the focus, hence the woodshop. On occasion, I still do techie installs, and recently the surge of Starlink internet has got my phone ringing. Most of the installs end up in speeds around 120 to 180 Mbps, which is a huge jump for a lot of these rural clients. However, the install yesterday blew all of that out of the water- over 200 Mbps after the test setup was done! That’s crazy for satellite internet, and is a game-changer for people out in the countryside. Highly recommend!

Very proud to show off this absolute unit of a bookshelf delivered and installed on site in NYC today. Standing over 9 feet high and nearly 5 feet wide, this shelf was done out of solid poplar and cabinet-grade ply, and finished in Benjamin Moore Advance Morning Dew. Shipped flat and assembled with the Lamello Clamex system, there is not a single visible fastener in the entire monolithic build. What can Piedmont Woodshop do for you?

The cherry bookshelves are done! This was one of the largest projects from this past year, and an incredible project from start to finish. The bookshelves are 100% solid Pennsylvania cherry, hand-finished with Fiddie’s wax, and joined with the Lamello Zeta P2 system for completely hidden fasteners. The crown and base were custom built to match the existing base and crown in the same room, and painted to match the existing baseboards. This will become the backdrop of a home office, and is a project that we want to show off again and again. What can Piedmont Woodshop do for you?
