This is my first try at sgrafitto (a technique where a design is scratched onto a colored surface). It was kind of therapeutic, sort of like doodling while on the phone or in a boring meeting. Anyway, it I really enjoyed it and look forward to making more.

I am so pleased with the last batch. Almost half of these are refired. I guess it pays off to take risks! I am starting to get a better picture in my head about what glazes I line and what combinations I will want to add to my permanent repertoire.

I’m notoriously clumsy so one sad moment was when I dropped the luminary right after I took a picture of it and it chipped 🥲 Perhaps I will repair and reglaze it.

As always, friends, if you see anything you’d like to have, let me know.

Roaming lizard out.

It’s been a hot minute since last time but I have been quite busy making things and also working a day job. But, friends, quite literally hot out of the kiln today, a small sample of what’s been cooking! More to come. When I have 5 minutes to breathe I’ll be putting things on Etsy, so if you see something you like, let me know! P.S. The espresso cups are a commission but I can make more. 🤩

Mine and my husband’s noodle bowls with chopsticks rest (he wanted one notch, mine has two, to place the chopsticks across because I think it looks better).

Also, the mug, which I immediately thought of as “the frog mug”, is made from that black clay that is still haunting me ( I have loads of it left). Good to see what glazes actually show on black clay though, for future reference.

There are three more cups from this batch, not pictured, that look really good but the glaze ran and ran and ran, so they need a bit of bottom grinding (😜)to be presentable.

The latest, and likely last, studio kiln-fired, batch of handmade pottery by yours truly. That black clay is a pain in what my mama gave me but it certainly turns out very nice, textured, and understated.
Tomorrow, my lovely husband and I will be setting up my very own kiln, at last, and I can't freaking wait! I might even get up before noon for that delight.
And finally, the plug- if you want one of these let me know. Otherwise, they'll be heading to other venues.

P.S. The Teapot has been claimed.

Getting better at achieving that shiny copper look. The bowl too, I love the way it turned out. It's meant to be held and used.
If anyone is interested in purchasing either one of these, DM me.

The teapot, oh my heart ❤️ It turned out better than I expected. The pictures don’t do it justice, and I always say that but it’s true.

The battle of the black clay continues and I think honk I’m finally winning! Contrary to all I’ve experienced so far, this clay needs to be caked with glaze. And when I think I’ve put too much, slather in some more. Subjugate that bad boy.

And finally, a small pour over. Just for one small cup.

If interested in purchasing any of these, please PM me.

I slowed down the video in some spots to show you the process inreal time. Sometimes it doesn’t look like anything is happening, but things are happening, albeit slowly. I’d rather take the extra time to make sure everything is right than rush it and flop the pot.

Update: the pour over set is sold.

I am getting the hang of how glazes work with this black clay. The pour over set is understated when it comes to colors but I quite like how it turned out.

If anyone is interested in any of these items, please DM.

I don’t know if have mentioned this before, but I use food-safe glazes and the vessels are dishwasher- and microwave-safe.

I have been trying out a dipping glaze I mixed a few weeks ago, on plain white textured clay, and I love the result. It even looks good on smooth surfaces, like on the insides. The wonky-looking mugs are hand-built, deliberately wonky to really drive that rustic look home. The black clay pour-over is a refired piece. The first time around, the clay ate all the glaze. So redid it with a better result. Though, to be honest, I don’t plan on working with this scratchy black clay any time soon. And lastly, the copper on this mug was intended to look much brighter and metallic but it must have not gotten to the high temperature required for that. Still not bad.

Since the slight hiccup in production, I’ve picked up again and here are the latest pieces. Both pour over sets are spoken for. But I can always make more.

Also, because I am one of the clumsiest people I know, I promptly dropped the ramen bowl after the picture was taken and…. Tile floor+gravity+breakable ceramics= fail and regret.
But I have a better idea on how to make my ramen bowls in the future.
