In March of 1932, a new building was constructed at the corner of South Second Street and King Avenue in Albemarle by local contractor D.A. Holbrooks. The new structure housed a taxi stand on one side and a “wiener shop” on the other. It is not clear when the “wiener shop” became known as Central Lunch, but a restaurant was in this location for many decades.

According to the September 27, 1977 Stanly News and Press, the building was undergoing a major renovation at that time. It was at this point that the building was covered with brick.

According to business owner George Carpenter, many of the bricks that were being used were from a number of local historic buildings that no longer existed. There were bricks from the old Stanly County Courthouse, the old Stanly County Jail, the old First Lutheran Education Building, along with bricks from the old East Albemarle and New London schools.

The photos show the bricks along the front, side and back of the building. Exactly which bricks are from those buildings is not known.

The new property owner recently received a Catalyst Grant award to redevelop the property. More information to come!
