Holiday shopping starts MONTHS before the holidays. 👀🎁 And what happens behind the shelves might surprise you.

What does it really take to prepare a small business for the busiest shopping season of the year?

On Episode 27 of Small Business, Big Life: Inside Fort Orange General Store, we’re taking you behind the scenes of our woman-owned, family-run shop in Downtown Albany, NY. 🧡

From reviewing sales data and testing new products to rearranging shelves and taking risks on new vendors, holiday prep is about much more than stocking up. It’s about making thoughtful decisions, supporting independent makers, and figuring out what our customers will love.

🎙️ THIS WEEK, WE’RE TALKING ABOUT:

🥩 Rogue Jerky Company — two delicious new beef jerky flavors we’re bringing to Albany.

☕ Hudson Roastery — small-batch coffee with fresh-roasted beans and blends inspired by Hudson, NY history.

🎨 Mark Adler — the Albany artist behind so much of the artwork and Nipper merchandise in our store, joining us for a special live art event at First Friday on November 6, from 5–7 PM.

📦 The real work of small-business ownership: inventory decisions, calculated risks, creative merchandising, and the partnerships that help independent businesses grow.

And, of course, there’s plenty of our usual husband-and-wife banter, family-business chaos, and a little celebration of a BIG podcast milestone. 👏

Because running a small business isn’t just about what you sell. It’s about the people, stories, and decisions that bring it all to life.

🍂 THERE’S MORE TO ALBANY, NY THAN MEETS THE EYE.

For Week 16 of Walk Albany With Us, we explored the streets, stoops and fall scenery that make Albany feel like home, with special guest and friend, Valerie Wencis of News Channel 10!

☕ We started at Jacob Alejandro Coffee on Madison Avenue, wandered through beautiful Washington Park, admired the historic brownstones along Willett Avenue, and explored the character-filled streets around Lancaster Street, Hudson - Jay Park and Lark Street.

From ornate ironwork and Victorian architecture to colorful fall foliage and front stoops with stories to tell, this is the Albany you discover when you slow down and look a little closer.

These neighborhoods aren’t just beautiful. They’re part of the history, personality and everyday life that make our city special. ❤️

At Fort Orange General Store, we believe the best way to celebrate Albany is to get out, explore and support the people and places that make it home.

📍 Save this walk for your next fall day in Albany, NY!
💬 Which street or neighborhood should we explore next?
➡️ And come back next Monday for Part 2, when Valerie shares why she chose this route and what she loves about these streets.

Why Albany? ❤️ Because this is home.

As lifelong Albany residents, buying Fort Orange General Store was about more than owning a small business. It was about investing in the city we love and becoming part of a story that was already being written.

When we took ownership of FOGS in November 2024, we saw an opportunity to carry something special forward while building something of our own.

A place to celebrate Albany, showcase local artists and makers, support small businesses, and give people a way to take a piece of this city home with them.

We believe in Albany. In its history, its architecture, its creative community, its independent businesses, and the people who continue to show up for this city.

Is it perfect? No. But it’s home. And we believe in what it can become.

Every local maker we feature, every customer who walks through our doors, and every conversation we share reminds us why buying this store was about so much more than a business transaction.

It’s about community. It’s about showing up. And it’s about helping write the next chapter of a city that means so much to us.

That’s what Fort Orange General Store means to us. ❤️

We’re proud to be part of Albany’s story, and we’re grateful to everyone who has welcomed us along the way.

Now we want to hear from you: What makes Albany, NY feel like home to YOU?

A favorite place? A local business? A memory? The people?

Tell us in the comments. Let’s celebrate the city we call home. 👇

THE CUSTOMER IS ALWAYS RIGHT… RIGHT? 👀🎙️

If you run a small business, work in retail, or have ever dealt with a difficult customer, this episode is for YOU.

On Episode 26 of Small Business, Big Life: Inside Fort Orange General Store, Joe and Erica are talking about the uncomfortable side of entrepreneurship: when customer service crosses the line and why standing up for yourself and your team matters.

We’re recapping Hounds of Halloween in Downtown Albany 🐾, sharing what great leadership looks like at a local business, and getting real about a difficult customer interaction at Fort Orange General Store.

Because there’s a difference between listening to your customers and accepting disrespect.

We believe in kindness, empathy, and supporting small businesses. But the people behind the counter deserve that same respect, too. 🧡

WALK ALBANY WITH US | WEEK 15 🏛️

What stories are hidden behind the doors of Albany’s historic buildings?

This week, we’re stepping inside the Albany Masonic Temple at 67 Corning Place to discover a remarkable piece of our city’s history.

We were graciously welcomed by the President of the Masonic hall association of Albany, who spent over an hour guiding us through all four floors, sharing the stories, history, and details behind each space.

And what a place to explore! From the grand staircase and ornate ironwork to the historic library, antique details, and a hand-operated Otis elevator, every room revealed something new.

But the history of this property reaches back much further than the building we see today.

On May 12, 1768, a cornerstone was laid here for a lodge house built and owned by a Masonic lodge. The property has remained in Masonic hands ever since, making this site an extraordinary part of Albany’s story. The present Renaissance Revival building was constructed in 1895–1896.

It’s a reminder that Albany’s history isn’t just found in monuments and museums. Sometimes, it’s tucked behind a doorway we pass every day, waiting for someone to share its story.

Thank you to the Temple’s president for opening the doors, sharing his knowledge, and helping us appreciate this remarkable landmark.
