Last night I had the opportunity to do a little fishing instead of guiding. I had my friend Matt in the boat with me. We pulled up on our first stop and I set the trolling motor on spot lock. Matt caught a fish on the first cast. That is usually not good luck. However, over the next hour, Matt and I boated 30 bass. Two other boats watched the entire show and I am sure one or both of them will be sitting on that spot tonight. Our best five would have gone 24-25 pounds. The crazy thing is after the first 30 the bite died. We ran several other great spots with nothing to show for it. We returned to the original starting spot and caught another good fish and then called it a night. I have not had 30 fish in one spot on lake fork in over 15 years.
Now for the rest of the story. Matt is not on FB. Matt is a military buddy of mine that served his country for 25 years. He spent over 8 years of total time in Iraq and Afghanistan. No one deserved last night’s epic hour of fishing more than he did. I am so lucky to have landed on that school and been able to provide my friend with a night he will never forget. In true lake fork fashion he broke off a big one in addition to the good ones he caught. And while fishing, he wore a shirt honoring a young police officer who was killed in 2007 in Arizona. For my Arizona peeps, Anthony Holly will never be forgotten.
With the lake at a constant level fishing will only get better, although I doubt I will top last nights efforts for a long time. Give me a shout to book an evening trip with me. 5pm to 930 pm is the deal for me.
We needed one rod each. C rig flukes.
