Meet local author, Tom Bentley-Fisher reading and signing copies of his new novel, The Boy Who Was Saved By Jazz.

When
Thursday, January 29 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM

About the book: Robert lost his father before he’d even been born, and was quickly abandoned by his young mother to be raised by his grandparents in small-town Saskatchewan. In another sense, though, Robert never lost his father, whose ghostly presence lingers in the young boy’s life over the years by means of spectral “advice letters” on how to be a man.

When Robert finds an old pump organ in a derelict farmhouse, he discovers a deep love of and talent for performing music. He also begins to discover secrets from his past, including his grandfather’s Communist ties, and the familial cover-up of his father’s sudden death. Along the way, Robert embraces his budding bisexuality, discovers his Métis identity and harnesses the power of his wild imagination.

Recalling the work of Jamie Fitzpatrick and Greg Rhyno, The Boy Who Was Saved By Jazz is a coming-of-age story and meditation on belonging.

Tom Bentley-Fisher’s short stories have been published in literary magazines in the US and Canada. He has written two produced plays, including a musical, and has had his work recorded as radio drama on Canadian Broadcasting Company. His collection of short stories, Blind Man’s Drum, published by Thistledown Press, was a finalist for Best Fiction for the Saskatchewan Book Awards, and his short story, Wars and Rumours of Wars, published by Prairie Journal, a finalist for the National Magazine Awards in humour. Tom has been artistic director of five professional theatres, gaining a strong reputation for developing and producing original and innovative work, including an all-female version of The Iliad which was featured at the International Grec Festival in Barcelona and toured Spain. He is currently the director of the YatBentley Centre for Performance, an international company based in Oakland.

We are thrilled to welcome former NFL wide receiver and activist Kenny Stills to celebrate his new book, Still Growing, Still Learning, Still Me! A Journey of Protest, Healing, and Personal Transformation: A Memoir. Thursday, February 5th 2026 at 6:30 pm

Over a nine-year career in the league, he made his mark not only as a deep-threat playmaker but also as a fearless voice for change. He used his platform to protest racial injustice, standing in solidarity with Colin Kaepernick and others to push for systemic reform. His commitment to advocacy extended beyond the field, working with grassroots organizations and engaging in community outreach to create meaningful impact.

Despite his success, his journey led him to deeper questions about identity, purpose, and healing. After years of external accomplishments, he turned inward, prioritizing therapy, mindset, and self-discovery. Through personal reflection, psychedelics, and a commitment to mental well-being, he began a transformative path toward inner peace, learning that true fulfillment comes from within.

In Still Growing, Still Learning, Still Me, Stills shares his story, one of resistance, redemption, and renewal. He opens up about the highs and lows of his life, the lessons learned through activism, and the importance of prioritizing joy and self-care. His journey is an invitation to others to embrace growth, challenge societal expectations, and find their own path to healing.

Big news! 💫

In order to successfully exit Chapter 11, we are being acquired by Barnes & Noble, subject to the approval of Bankruptcy Court.

But that doesn't mean Books Inc. is going anywhere...

Going forward, we will still be Books Inc., locally run, with the same name, stores, culture, leadership, and booksellers you know and love.

More things you should know:
💫All gift cards will be honored.
💫Rewards points can be transferred into our new system.
💫Book clubs, author events, and community gatherings will continue as an essential part of who we are.
💫We plan to have a brief period during which our stores are closed for renovation.

This acquisition will give us the stability and resources to keep our shelves stocked with the books you're looking for, while keeping everything that makes Books Inc. special going strong.

We're excited to continue our story together and to celebrate our 175th anniversary with you next year!

Happy Thursday, friends!

One more day until we’re cozying up to a weekend full of vibrant new reads, and tonight’s spectacular author event with local author Stacie Grey might be the best way to kick it off!

Join us tonight at 6:30pm for a delightful reading of Stacie’s new thriller, She Didn’t Stand a Chance! Plus, we have it on good authority that there may be pastries involved, too.
