What a wonderful day of connection, collaboration, and planning at our 2026 Global Ties Akron Board and Staff Retreat!

We are grateful to everyone who joined us as we reflected on our accomplishments, discussed opportunities ahead, and strengthened our shared vision for the future of Global Ties Akron.

A special thank you to Litsa and Orestes for graciously opening their home and providing such warm hospitality. We are also grateful to Doug Kohl for sharing his valuable insights on board leadership and fundraising. Doug brings a wealth of experience through his current role with the Akron Symphony Orchestra and his distinguished service as former CEO of the Akron Area YMCA.

The conversations, ideas, and energy generated throughout the retreat will help guide our work as we continue fostering international exchange, citizen diplomacy, and global connections in our community.

Thank you to our board members, staff, and supporters for your continued commitment to our mission. We look forward to an exciting year ahead!

Global Ties Akron was pleased to welcome a delegation from Latvia this past weekend through a program administered by the Congressional Office for International Leadership.

This week, the participants are staying with local host families and taking part in a variety of professional meetings, cultural experiences, and community activities throughout the Akron and Cleveland area.

The group began the week with a visit to the City of Akron, where they met with Mayor Shammas Malik and Deputy Director of Economic Development Suzie Graham Moore. Thank you both for taking the time to share insights about Akron’s growth, innovation, and economic development efforts.

The day also included attending a Summit County Council meeting at the Summit County Board of Elections, providing the delegation with an opportunity to learn more about local government and civic engagement.

We look forward to a week of meaningful exchanges and new connections between our communities!

Today, we honor and remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country.

Memorial Day is a time to reflect on the sacrifices made by generations of service members and to express gratitude for the freedoms we enjoy because of their courage and dedication.

As we gather with family and friends, may we also take a moment to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice. 🇺🇸

We had a great time welcoming the IVLP group on Science-Based Water Resources Management for the Indo-Pacific to Akron.

The group toured the Akron Water Reclamation Facility and met with the Akron Water Supply Bureau to learn more about how the city manages and protects its water systems. They also connected with the Ohio and Erie Canalway Coalition and ended the visit with a tour of the newly opened Summit Lake NorthShore Park.

It was a wonderful opportunity to share local expertise and explore how our community is working to support sustainable water management.

Since joining Global Ties Akron in April, Naomi Dubabagi has been busy building connections throughout our community, and the past couple of weeks have been full of meaningful experiences and new partnerships.

Naomi recently visited Red Oak Behavioral Health, where she toured the facility and learned techniques used to support sensory-challenged youth, including the use of weighted blankets for comfort and headphones to Red Oak Behavioral Health, where she toured the facility and learned techniques used to support sensory-challenged youth, including the use of weighted blankets for comfort and headphones to help reduce noise stimulation. Special thanks to Ann Robson for such an engaging and informative visit.

She also connected with community partners through several international exchange programs, including visits to Northside Marketplace as part of an IVLP Workforce and Business Development program, and the & Erie Canalway Coalition through IVLP Science-Based Water Resource Management discussions.

Outside of formal meetings, Naomi has been exploring Northeast Ohio and immersing herself in the community. She visited Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens and explored Cuyahoga Valley National Park twice this week, first with former Global Ties Akron team member Jennifer Batton, and again alongside fellow CEE participants working with Greater Cleveland Neighborhood Centers Association and Tinkers Creek Watershed Partners.

Naomi has also spent the past two weeks volunteering with a youth program through South Street Ministries, another valued Community Resource Partner.

Back at her desk, she has been preparing a presentation about Papua New Guinea and would love opportunities to share it with local youth groups, schools, or businesses interested in learning more about her home country and culture.

We are grateful for Naomi’s enthusiasm, curiosity, and willingness to build meaningful relationships throughout Akron and Northeast Ohio.
