Ana’s journey began with a passion for law, inspired by her desire to defend the rights of people with disabilities. Despite facing discrimination—such as completing high school online to avoid prejudice—she aced the university entrance exam. With the crucial support of a devoted professor who accompanied her to classes, helped with studies, and prepared her for exams, Ana not only completed her degree but excelled.

In New Zealand, You Can Pick Fresh Fruit Straight from Public Trees—No Cost, No Catch, Just Community

In a world where fresh food often comes with a price tag, New Zealand is quietly growing a beautiful alternative one that nourishes both body and community. Across cities like Auckland, Nelson, and Waiheke Island, fruit trees are intentionally planted in public spaces along sidewalks, in parks, and even on roadside berms so that anyone can pick fresh produce for free.

Supported by local councils and community trusts, these trees yield everything from apples and plums to figs, feijoas, and even bananas. The initiative is part of a larger movement toward urban foraging, which invites locals to gather seasonal food directly from public land. Through Urban Foraging NZ, there’s even a collaborative online map that helps residents find fruit and nut trees near them, contribute updates, and share their harvest discoveries.

On Waiheke Island, the impact is especially visible nearly 1,000 trees have been planted through the “Love Our Fruit Trees” initiative. Locals serve as "tree guardians," caring for the plants and ensuring they remain healthy and accessible. But this effort goes far beyond free snacks. It promotes food resilience, reduces food waste, and creates a shared sense of environmental stewardship and neighborhood connection.

In New Zealand, picking an apple off a tree isn’t just an act of foraging it’s a gesture of community-powered sustainability, one fruit at a time.
