President Trump comes into tonight’s State of the Union speech in a very different political position than he was a year ago. His approval ratings are cratering. His policies have inspired backlash, even in parts of the country that supported him. The Supreme Court has, as of last week, thrown out his sweeping international tariffs, the main pillar of his economic program. And still, he will probably proclaim victory, Susan B. Glasser writes.

“He used his speech last year, just six weeks into his second term, to claim that he had already done more than all the other Presidents before him did, including George Washington,” Glasser notes. “To Trump, he is always the greatest of all time at whatever it is that he is doing. A triumphant address is the default setting for this President, so that’s what we’re likely to hear this time, too. And, if you’re looking for a coherent theory of that case, well, don’t hold your breath.” Read more in today’s newsletter: https://newyorkermag.visitlink.me/hjuXx5

“THIS ISN’T THE END OF MY STORY.” ILIA MALININ FLIPS THE SCRIPT WITH A DEFIANT, TEARFUL OLYMPIC FAREWELL

After the heartbreak of falling short in the men’s final, Ilia Malinin returned to Olympic ice with nothing to lose — and everything to say. The Exhibition Gala became his redemption stage as he stormed back under the Milan lights, trading medals for message and pressure for pure, explosive expression. Dressed in black and skating with raw intensity, Malinin launched into multiple jaw-dropping backflips, each one landing like a declaration that artistry and audacity still belong to him. The crowd roared not out of sympathy, but awe, as the so-called “Quad God” turned disappointment into defiance. Between the power and the tears, there was something unmistakably human in his performance — a young man confronting expectation, criticism, and his own doubt in real time. When he finished, chest heaving and eyes glassy, the arena rose as one, sensing that this was more than a gala skate; it was a promise. He may have left Milan without gold, but he walked away having reclaimed his fire — and made it clear that his next chapter is already in motion. Watch the unforgettable moment below 👇

VIDEO — “QUAD GOD” ILIA MALININ DELIVERS A POWERFUL, UNFILTERED STATEMENT ON SOCIAL MEDIA PRESSURE AT MILANO CORTINA 2026

As the final lights dimmed on the Milano Cortina 2026 skating gala, Ilia Malinin — known worldwide as the “Quad God” — stepped onto the ice with more than choreography to share. This wasn’t just a performance. It was a response.

For years, Malinin has skated beneath towering expectations and constant online scrutiny. From his opening glide, it was clear this program carried something deeper than celebration. Each measured step seemed to echo the weight of public judgment, while every explosive quad jump felt like a direct answer to critics who questioned him.

His expression shifted between intensity and quiet reflection as the music surged, turning the rink into a stage for something deeply personal. Fierce yet controlled, emotional yet precise, he transformed pressure into movement.

When he finished with his signature pose to sustained applause, the message resonated: beyond the medals and headlines stands a young athlete learning to steady himself in the storm — using the ice as his voice. WATCH BELOW 👇👇
