1959 Trinidad Guardian, 1943 Trinidad $1,1962 Independece medal, 1960’s Red cross Medal, 2012 independence medal

From Colony to Country Collection 🇹🇹

The centerpiece is a beautifully engraved 1943 Government of Trinidad and Tobago One Dollar note, issued during the Second World War. Produced under British colonial administration, the note features detailed scenes of both Trinidad and Tobago, symbolizing the twin island colony decades before Independence.

Complementing the note is an original Trinidad Guardian newspaper dated 21 December 1959, published just three years before Independence. The late 1950s marked a defining period in local history, as Trinidad and Tobago participated in the West Indies Federation while political leaders debated the future of self government. Newspapers from this era provide an authentic snapshot of daily life and public discourse during the closing years of colonial administration.

Among the most significant pieces is the original 1962 Independence Medal, issued to commemorate 31 August 1962, the day Trinidad and Tobago became an independent nation. Unlike later commemorative issues, medals from 1962 were created at the very moment history was being made, making them especially meaningful relics of Independence.

Adding further historical depth is the Trinidad and Tobago Red Cross Society Badge of Merit, a distinguished service award dating to the mid 20th century. Presented by the Society’s Council to recognize exceptional humanitarian service, the badge represents the often-overlooked contributions of volunteers who supported healthcare, disaster relief and community welfare throughout the colony and early years of nationhood.
Rounding out the display is a 2012 Golden Jubilee Medal, commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of Independence. While the newest item in the collection, it serves as a fitting bookend to the story begun by the 1943 banknote and 1959 newspaper celebrating how far the nation had progressed in the fifty years since achieving self government.

1938 $5 TRINIDAD-ROYAL BANK OF CANADA-Port of Spain private issue

Issued on January 3rd, 1938, this Royal Bank of Canada $5 note is a tangible survivor from the era when commercial banks supplied much of the circulating paper money used in Trinidad and Tobago. Printed exclusively for circulation within the colony and bearing the inscription “Redeemable Only in Trinidad,” the note is denominated as Five Trinidad Dollars (£1-0-10 sterling). Its intricate design features an impressive ocean going steamship on the face, symbolizing the maritime trade routes that connected Trinidad to Canada and the wider British Empire, while the reverse is centered around the Royal Coat of Arms framed by an ornate green guilloche design intended to convey stability, security, and confidence in the issuing institution.

Beyond its numismatic significance, this note represents an important chapter in the history of the Royal Bank of Canada. RBC’s presence in Trinidad can be traced to 1902 when the Union Bank of Halifax established a branch at the corner of Abercromby Street and Marine Square in Port of Spain, then the commercial heart of the colony. Following RBC’s acquisition of the Union Bank in 1910, the Bank expanded from a single branch into one of the most influential financial institutions in Trinidad and the wider Caribbean, supporting commerce, industry, shipping, and economic development during a period of profound growth. By the time this note was issued in 1938, RBC had become firmly woven into the economic fabric of the nation.

Today, this note stands as far more than a rare collectible. Issued from RBC’s Port of Spain operations overlooking historic Marine Square, now Independence Square. It represents a tangible link between the Bank’s early Caribbean expansion and its enduring presence in Trinidad and Tobago more than a century later. Few artifacts so directly connect the institution’s origins, the evolution of banking in the colony, and the continued legacy of RBC in the Caribbean. It is a beautiful surviving piece of Trinidad and Tobago’s financial history.

1939, 1969 Trinidad and Tobago $1 combined with Food For All coin collection

Trinidad & Tobago monetary grouping, capturing the evolution of the island’s financial identity across colonial government issue, Central Bank authority, and modern commemorative coinage.

At the heart of this display is the iconic 1939 Government of Trinidad and Tobago One Dollar note, a beautifully engraved colonial issue featuring the classic Port of Spain harbour scene and Tobago vignette a design that reflects trade, empire, and the economic lifeblood of the colony on the eve of the Second World War. Paired above is the later Central Bank of Trinidad and Tobago One Dollar note bearing Queen Elizabeth II, representing the transition into a new monetary era under local central banking authority while still retaining strong colonial symbolism through the coat of arms and royal portraiture.

The accompanying Trinidad & Tobago one dollar coins complete the story, showing the country’s move from paper currency into everyday circulating coinage and commemorative issues. Together, this group is more than currency, it is a compact timeline of Trinidad & Tobago’s political, economic, and cultural transformation, from British colonial administration to national monetary independence.

1880, 1901 GOLD U.S. LIBERTY HEAD HALF EAGLE

Struck in 1880 and 1901, these $5 gold coins feature Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY on the front and the American eagle on the reverse. Composed of 90% gold, it weighed about 8.36 grams and embodied the stability of the U.S. gold standard.

While not legal tender in Trinidad, which used British pounds and shillings, coins like this occasionally circulated informally in the colony’s bustling port economy. American traders visiting Port of Spain often settled large transactions in U.S. gold, and merchants or bankers accepted such coins by weight alongside British sovereigns and Spanish doubloons.

Today, the Half Eagle reflects an era when gold connected economies across the Atlantic and the Caribbean, serving as both trusted currency and a symbol of expanding trade.

WWII 1939 Trinidad Church Army recommendation letter, 1941-42 Certificates of discharge and $1 1939 Banknote

The significance of this ensemble lies in its untouched continuity. The recommendation letter reflects the role religious and social institutions such as the Church Army played in shaping colonial society, often acting as moral gatekeepers and references for young men seeking military enlistment. The accompanying discharge booklet provides the closing chapter of that service, preserving the soldier’s transition from civilian to serviceman and back again during the wartime years. When combined with the 1939 Trinidad $1 banknote a surviving monetary artifact from the exact same colonial period. The collection bridges military, social, and economic history into one cohesive narrative. Pieces of this nature are increasingly difficult to assemble intact, particularly with direct Trinidadian provenance and clear wartime association, making it an exceptional archival grouping for advanced collectors of Caribbean militaria, colonial ephemera, and West Indian history.

French line Caribbean Tours Compagnie Générale Transatlantique ship token

An attractive survivor from the golden age of Caribbean ocean travel, this bronze Antilles medal was issued by the famed French Line, Compagnie Générale Transatlantique, for the luxury liner Antilles which regularly docked in Trinidad during the 1950s and 1960s. Vintage advertisements from the period proudly promoted voyages through the West Indies, specifically listing Trinidad among the glamorous ports of call alongside Barbados, Martinique, Curaçao, and Kingston. For many Trinidadians, ships like the Antilles represented far more than travel they symbolized migration, opportunity, prestige, and connection to Europe during an era before widespread air travel transformed the Caribbean.

Beautifully designed by celebrated French medalist Raymond Delamarre, the medal captures the romance of the tropics with elegant Caribbean imagery surrounding the famous liner itself. Pieces such as this are far more than maritime souvenirs; they are tangible relics of Trinidad’s place within the great passenger routes of the Atlantic. A highly desirable historical piece for the advanced Trinidad & Tobago collector, combining maritime history, Caribbean heritage, and classic French medallic artistry in one impressive bronze issue.

Mixed British coins used in Trinidad and Tobago 1836-1930’s combined with 1950’s Red Cross medal

This charming collection represents a tangible connection to the British colonial monetary system once used throughout Trinidad and Tobago during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Included are silver denominations such as the 1836 silver one shilling, 1941 silver one shilling, two 1942 silver one shillings, along with the 1948 and 1953 six pence pieces, all of which circulated locally during a period when British currency formed the backbone of commerce across the colony. The large bronze pennies dated 1918, 1927 and 1938 would have passed through the hands of merchants, dock workers, estate laborers, and shopkeepers during an era shaped by cocoa exports, wartime economies, and the steady influence of the British Empire in the Caribbean. These coins reflect the transition between the reigns of King George V, King George VI, and Queen Elizabeth II, preserving the evolving portraiture and symbolism of Britain’s imperial presence in Trinidad and Tobago.

Adding a deeply historical and civic element to the group is the 1950s “Trinidad and Tobago Red Cross Life Member” medal, mounted on its original card from J.R. Gaunt & Son Ltd. of London, one of the most respected manufacturers of military, royal, and civic insignia throughout the British Commonwealth. The wording “By Appointment to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II” places the piece within the early Elizabethan era, highlighting the continued ceremonial connection between Trinidad and Britain before independence in 1962. More than just a medal, it represents a period when organizations such as the Red Cross played an important humanitarian role throughout the islands, particularly in healthcare, disaster response, and wartime support. Together, the coins and medal form a compact but meaningful portrait of colonial Trinidad and Tobago blending commerce, monarchy, public service, and everyday life into a single historical grouping appealing to collectors of Caribbean and British Commonwealth history.

TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO 1943 $2,1964 Queen series $1,$5 and 1977 republic series $100

A visual timeline of Trinidad and Tobago’s monetary history, this grouping captures the evolution of the nation’s paper currency from the colonial era into the modern Central Bank period. Featured at the top is a striking 1943 Government of Trinidad and Tobago Two Dollars note issued during World War II, a period when the colony remained under British administration and currency was produced under government authority rather than an independent central bank. The note beautifully depicts iconic local scenery, including the Miseique Road and the Three Sisters off Tobago, reflecting the pride and identity of the islands even during colonial rule. Notes of this era circulated during a transformative period in Trinidad’s economic development, fueled by oil production and wartime trade throughout the Caribbean.

Below are early Central Bank of Trinidad and Tobago issues, representing the transition into a newly independent nation asserting its own financial identity after the establishment of the Central Bank in 1964. The classic “young Queen Elizabeth II” portrait series became one of the most recognizable designs in Trinidad and Tobago’s monetary history. The vibrant red One Dollar, green Five Dollar, and blue One Hundred Dollar notes showcase the elegant engraved artistry and security printing styles of the 1960s–1970s era. Particularly notable is the One Hundred Dollar note, a denomination that symbolized prestige and purchasing power at a time when TT$100 represented a substantial sum in Caribbean commerce. Together, these notes form more than a currency collection, they represent the economic, political and cultural evolution of Trinidad and Tobago from colony to independent republic.
