I begin every class period with a Question of the Day. Sometimes they're silly, like: "If you create a pet for yourself combining an crocodile with one other animal, what would it be and why?" but I like to sprinkle in some of the more personal and introspective questions to build community and to better understand my students. Wonder, The Giver, and Harry Potter have been their most popular responses.
My answer has changed over the years, and many books have changed me in different ways, but I would say that most recently The Many Daughters of Afong May by Jamie Ford has changed my perspective about generational trauma and has greatly impacted my ability to better empathize with my family, students, and even myself.
What about you? I would love to hear about a book's impact on your life, whether it was recently or in adolescence.
