Author : Stephen Ressler (Actor), The Great Courses (Director) .
Number Of Pages : 353p.
Language : English.
Type : eBook (PDF).
Description :
You can confidently tackle a working suspension bridge, airplane, helicopter, catapult, clock, and other technological wonders in your own home workshop. These projects are challenging but achievable. They require only readily available materials and a workshop equipped with common benchtop power tools. Do-It-Yourself Engineering shows how in 17 engaging DIY projects that you create exactly as an engineer does: starting with the concept, working out the design, plunging into construction, and finally putting the final product to the test. Your enthusiastic guide is award-winning teacher Stephen Ressler, a DIY addict and Professor Emeritus from the United States Military Academy at West Point. Using in-studio and in-shop demonstrations, detailed graphics, and 3D computer models, Professor Ressler walks you through the entire process, including the crucial planning phase, which is where most people wonder, “Where do I start?” As you develop your design, he shows how simple high-school mathematics can be used to calculate the loads caused by pedestrians on a bridge, aerodynamic lift developed by an airplane wing, torque in a turbine, and other engineering parameters. Plus, you learn how to apply elementary physics concepts, such as the conservation of energy, Newton’s laws, and Bernoulli’s principle. In addition, Dr. Ressler gives you indispensable shop tips on the use of tools. Above all, he teaches you how to think like an engineer in approaching any problem.

Book Name : Aerospace Engineering on the Back of an Envelope.
Author : by Irwin E. Alber.
Number Of Pages : 347p.
Language : English.
Type : eBook (PDF).
Description :
Engineers need to acquire “Back-of-the-Envelope” survival skills to obtain rough quantitative answers to real-world problems, particularly when working on projects with enormous complexity and very limited resources. In the case studies treated in this book, we show step-by-step examples of the physical arguments and the resulting calculations obtained using the quick-fire method. We also demonstrate the estimation improvements that can be obtained through the use of more detailed physics-based Back-of-the-Envelope engineering models. These different methods are used to obtain the solutions to a number of design and performance estimation problems arising from two of the most complex real-world engineering projects: the Space Shuttle and the Hubble Space Telescope satellite.

Book Name : A Guide To Amateur Rocketry U.S. Army Field Artillery School.
Author : by U.S. ARMY FIELD ARTILLERY SCHOOL.
Number Of Pages : 52p.
Language : English.
Type : eBook (PDF).
Description :
A rare and classic handbook for designing, building, testing, and flying successful home-built rockets. One of the first--perhaps THE first, and one of the most useful--handbooks for amateur rocketry. Apparently first published in the late 1960s, it's one of the few documents anywhere showing early military support for this hobby. An excellent guide for everyone interested in getting started making their own experimental rockets, showing how it's done with common materials and chemicals. Provides detailed information and data for solid propellants made from ordinary zinc dust mixed with sulfur (the so-called "micrograin" formulas). The Guide was issued with the blessings of The Commanding General of the U.S. Army Field Artillery Center. In the preface, Gen. Brown says "The United States Army desires to extend the maximum degree of assistance to, and to cooperate fully, these budding scientists in their experimentations. To further assist our young scientists, the United States Army Field Artillery School has prepared this booklet." Explains the thermochemistry and reactions of zinc dust and sulfur propellants. Shows exactly how to calculate the correct amounts of each ingredient, and how to load and compact zinc-sulfur propellants. Guidelines for safely developing, mixing, and testing new and unknown propellants. Shows how to calculate propellant density, specific impulse (Isp), how to predict and calculate engine thrust. How to calculate propellant grain size, combustion chamber wall thickness, nozzle dimensions, exit area and diameter. Has many illustrations, showing various nozzle designs, with instructions on how to make them; rocket motor and nozzle dimensions; etc. Explains how to design and build reliable rocket motor igniters, relay boxes, and firing panels circuits. Unfortunately, the quality of that document is very poor, having been originally printed with a simple mimeograph machine onto low-quality paper at Fort Sill.
