Beneath our feet, hidden from history, many ancient cultures believed there was another world, a vast hidden realm known as the Inner Earth, or the Hollow Earth.

Some believed it was the original Eden, the place where Adam and Eve first lived before being sent to the surface.

The Babylonians called it Irkalla.
The Sumerians called it KUR.
The ancient Chinese called it Diyu.
The Japanese called it Yomi.
The Mayans called it Xibalba.
The Incas called it Uku Pacha.
The Aztecs spoke of Chicomoztoc, the Place of Seven Caves, where their ancestors emerged from the underground world to the surface.

Again and again, these stories describe god like beings rising from below, creating humanity, or teaching civilization to survivors after a great cataclysm.

Why do so many civilizations across the world share the same mysterious story of an underground realm?

Just like the ancient flood myths found across dozens of cultures, when the same legend appears again and again, it may point to something more than myth, perhaps forgotten history.
