For this project, he traveled between 2005 and 2008 to Teheran, Isfahan, Yazd, Shiraz, and other smaller cities and historical sites in Iran. His excursions led to the creation of a new group of works in which he examines various aspects of contemporary Iranian architecture in their cultural and historical context.

Like Niedermayr’s previous books, this project, which the artist developed in close collaboration with the graphic designers and the publisher, will certainly prove to be a highlight of the art of photo books

‘One Shape of the Language: Cyrillic Archives’ is an artist’s book documenting Inna Kochkina’s research into the history, style, and politics of traditional Cyrillic.

This research was born from Kochkina’s self-reflective curiosity about the relationship between cultural heritage and typography and evolved into an examination of the socio-political role of traditional Cyrillic. An ancient script, Cyrillic has been used to express various forms of cultural and territorial domination and continues to serve as an imperialist tool, having long been deployed in support of Slavic nationalism both in Russia and in the former USSR territories.

This publication is the result of Kochkina’s own research into and engagement with archives of typography, as well as conversations with anti-colonial activists, artists, and historians who interrogate traditional Cyrillic and its relationship to colonial power.

This text begins with the mishearing of a word. It starts from the place of inconvenience and unravels a hearing not contained within one fixed conversation.

A hearing that has been expanded into a writing that begins in your bank and extends to your throat when its language heard writes itself into and onto the muscles.

It begins in your bank and extends to your throat ruminates on how digital algorithms turn words into capital, disciplining language and the body. Its writing explores how search engines link profitability to vocabularies and how productivity dictates posture, raising whether we can separate language and our bodies from economic structures.

We are truly happy to introduce our small curated selection here within the quaint, historic building of Sala Saneha. The new standalone cinema and wine bar, as we are joining a community of co-living libraries and other bookshops here.

As bookshop owners and readers, we often find ourselves wondering: Where else in this city can we go to simply browse, read, and perhaps take a new book home?

With a kind invitation from Sala Saneha, we decided to make this 'imaginary space' a physical reality. We are thrilled to bring a curated selection of Vacilando to this street of Decho Road. It’s the physical manifestation of the reading culture we’ve always imagined for our city.

Masahisa Fukase’s Origin: ‘Homo Ludens’ — Revived After Half a Century

“Masahisa Fukase’s first photo book, ‘Homo Ludens’ (Yugi) (Chuo-koron-sha, Contemporary Images 4), was published in 1971. This anthology of photographs, taken over more than ten years and edited by Camera Mainichi editor Shoji Yamagishi, is a collection that marks the origin of Fukase’s work and is filled with images and essence that would shape Fukase’s later creations, is structured into six sections, each vividly capturing the interplay between photography and life.

Throughout these sections, ‘Homo Ludens’ conveys the mutual interplay of all living things, and the contradictory yet interconnected phenomena of life and death, meeting and parting.

Fukase’s lens is turned towards himself and those close to him, The images explore the essence of life as a form of play, with raw and unflinching honesty. This first photo book stands as a powerful testament to Fukase’s vision.

For this new reprint edition, all photographs and texts from the original version have been included, with a focus on reconfiguring the design to emphasize the relationship between the images and surrounding negative space, as well as the multilayered nature of the title. This approach serves as a timeless response to Fukase’s vision.

With its exploration of the many facets of ‘Homo Ludens’, it remains a significant work, offering a renewed perspective not only on Fukase’s oeuvre but also on the act of seeing itself and our own existence.

Named after Kafka’s 1926 novel, The Castle prompts questions about the ‘visibility’ of refugees and the erosion of their human rights.

Richard Mosse has spent the past few years documenting the ongoing refugee and migration crisis, repurposing military-grade camera technology to confront how governments and societies perceive refugees. His latest book The Castle is a meticulous record of refugee camps located across mass migration routes from the Middle East and Central Asia into the European Union via Turkey. Using a thermal video camera intended for long-range border enforcement, Mosse films the camps from high elevations to draw attention to the ways in which each interrelates with, or is divorced from, adjacent citizen infrastructure. His source footage is then broken down into hundreds of individual frames, which are digitally overlapped in a grid formation to create composite heat maps.

What is artistic research? What is a research document? How do these relate to the making process, invention, and creativity? What exactly is expected of me? If you have ever asked yourself any of these questions, then this book is for you. Research For People Who (Think They) Would Rather Create addresses all relevant aspects that need to be considered during a research and documentation process, such as: finding the right topic and approach; formulating your research question; working out your methods; choosing one or more suitable writing styles; and considering the possible roles of visual, virtual, auditory, embodied, and spatial materials.
