Today I gave a print of this map (in Spanish) of Benelux to my first invitee to my podcast Geographics: the Geography of Things. She had a question: what is the difference between the Netherlands and Holland?

I explained to her that the Netherlands is one of the four constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands: the other being Curaçao, Aruba and Sint Maarten. Capital: Amsterdam; seat of government: Den Haag. 12 are the provinces of the Netherlands: Drenthe, Flevoland, Friesland, Gelderland, Groningen, North Brabant, North Holland. Overijssel, South Holland, Utrecht, Zeeland + 3 special municipalities in the Caribbean Sea: Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba. Holland being just a region of the country; the most influential.

I decided to gave away a map of Benelux to remember that in 1815 when the modern state of the Kingdom of the Netherlands was born, at the time Belgium and Luxembourg were part of the Kingdom till their independences in 1830 and 1839 respectively.

In the map we can see the most important geographical features of Benelux: the Rhine, the Meuse, the Scheldt, the IJssel, and the hilly region of the Ardennes.

What is the main characteristic of a buffer state? They lie in between two competing powers and they manage to adopt a neutral foreign policy towards both countries maintaining an equilibrium of influence and avoiding conflict rooted in this competition.

What is the difference between a buffer state and a neutral actor? The key difference is that a neutral actor isn’t geographically surrounded by the competing powers.

Do buffer states and neutral actors have something in common? Yes, they do. In both cases, the country pledges neutrality toward competing powers.

The German Empire was founded in 1871 when south German states joined the North German Confederation. The new state entitled the King of Prussia as the German Emperor, the Kaiser. This move constitutionally guaranteed Prussian dominance in the Empire. Indeed, Prussia contained about 2/3 of the total population and territory.

The German Empire consisted in 26 states, most of them ruled by local royal families: 4 kingdoms, 6 grand duchies, 5 duchies, 7 principalities, 3 free and Hanseatic cities and 1 imperial territory. A particularity is that free and Hanseatic cities had a republican form of government, though they surrendered their sovereignty over the Kaiser.

The Empire came to and end after the November Revolution in 1918 when the monarchy was abolished and it became a post-war federal republic devastated by WWI facing a $270 billion reparations. This was a leading factor of the rise of Adolf Hi**er.

Even when not all of the United Nations Security Council permanent members are signatories of the Rome Statute, they can’t block investigation of the International Criminal Court thanks to their veto right at the Council.

Note: Myanmar is not a signatory to ICC, so technically, the Rohingya inquiry can’t be legally binding in their territory.

Thailand recent political history has been characterized by numerous coups and attempts. Since last century, there hasn’t been any period of more than 15 years without a military intervention during a transition of power. Last coup, in 2014, made major changes in the democratic order or Thailand, as a result: every member of the Thai Senate is appointed by the Royal Thai Army, reserving 1/3 of seats for military force.

Green-Lined Vision Is Blurring Reality in Israel-Palestine by Yousef Munayyer

Just as events in Jerusalem and Gaza put the Palestinian struggle for freedom back on center stage. For decades, there has been a one-state problem in Israel-Palestine. Since 1967, one state has militarily ruled over the territory from the river to the sea. That state, of course, is Israel. For over half a century, an ostensibly temporary occupation has entrenched itself as permanent and has been normalized. The ultimate power in the West Bank shaping Palestinian lives is the state of Israel and not the Palestinian Authority. Israel’s colonization of the West Bank proliferated over these years, and it has sunk billions of dollars into integrating these settlements with the rest of the country. Palestinian enclaves, as a result, are scattered and isolated with no contiguity. What’s more, Palestinians and Israelis themselves are all over the map and while Israelis have full citizenship rights no matter where in this territory they live, Palestinians have a varied set of limited rights as second-class citizens or no citizenship at all.

GDP gives you an idea of how “big” the economy of a country is, but it isn’t a fair way for comparing economies between two countries. That’s why it is important to take a look to GDP (PPP) too.

Guide of international powers. Can you tell what’s difference between a regional power and a great power? Can you identify what countries have so much international influence that they must be recognized as a superpower? Did you know that there is one nation with so much power that is even considered as a hyperpower?
