Just answered a question on "quora" on "How to become a better sax player" and figured I should share it here too.

At the risk of sounding totally lame, ... find yourself a teacher and practice daily.
Make sure to keep it fun and always end with a tune that you really like. Never mind if you can't play it all the way through.
practice long notes, play them while keeping them steady as well as pitch them up and down.
learn the scales, at least the basic ones
listen to other players, not necessarily famous or well known, just other players. If you can, take group lessons. You will learn from your peers too.
listen to yourself, record your practice session end tune.
stick with the mouthpiece and reed combination that you're currently using. (provided your teacher approves them) don't change that combination until you discovered that the MP and reed are actually working for you. This may sound strange but when you get to that point you'll know exactly what I mean.
Finally, take every opportunity to jam with others. There is no better way to grow, as a player, than to interact with other musicians and have fun while at it!
