Not bragging or anything, but check my grannies farm in Sheikh looking paradisiacal. It's also quite the impossible task to keep children away from swimming in that pond.

Standing here at the border between Ethiopia and Somaliland. The tree behind me stands as the borderline between the two countries.

The border runs trough the city Wajaale, making the city divided in their loyalty.

Guess which side Ethiopia/Somaliland is.*

Somaliland is facing one of the biggest environmental disasters in the world. As a nation barely civilized, it’s dealing with a population relying 95% on charcoal to prepare their daily meals. Naturally as charcoal is made from wood, a widespread of tree cutting causes the deforestation of the landscape.

But due to lack of trees now in the rural areas of the country, drought has become the norm. An irregular rainfall also meant an unhealthy soil with the occasional rain causing soil erosion to devastate the land. This means the livestock will lose their grazing land and with livestock as their economical backbone, many pastoralists suffer from poor income.

In turn the nomads are forced to migrate to the urban cities and change lifestyle. They seek better opportunities. But it’s not just them who are suffering, the whole population is in uncertainty since their health and economy is dependent on the forest.

What prevention measures would you suggest?

The nomad way of life, it’s not exactly the easiest lifestyle out there. For that reason a nomad is raised tough from the early start.

As soon as a boy reaches the age of 5, he is thrown into the deep. At this age the young nomad takes up on the responsibility of herding the goats and sheep.

Although the parents aware of the dangers that lure around the tough task of herding at such an age, despite hearing the growl of an Hyena’s or alert to the nearby cliffs, the harsh life forces them to be hard on their barely 3 feet tall kid,

At the age of 10-12 after graduating from the smaller herd, the teenager at this stage believed to be a man is now entrusted with the real deal: the tending of camels!

Nothing beats reading a book out in the nature, notably when the book is in a nomadic narrative.

Reading this while sitting under the shade of an thorn tree, the cool and gentle breeze beautifully compliment the novel to set the perfect mood.

(Black Mamba boy by Nadifa Mohamed. Highly recommended!)
