Singapore is one of the top export destinations for Malaysia's King of Fruits, the Musang King Durian! Durian tasting tourism is a booming business. Bus loads of Singaporeans cross the border daily and drive for hours on their way to Pahang, Malaysia where the most delicious Musang King is grown. On top of that over 10,000 Chinese tourists flock into Malaysia annually to taste the King of fruits.

FYI: Pahang is Where Plantations International has Malaysia's First & ONLY organic Musang King Durian plantation. 😎

Hyatt to open first Andaz hotel in Thailand

Hyatt is set to make a mark on Thailand’s luxury and lifestyle hotel sector with the opening of the country’s first Andaz hotel later this year.

Andaz Pattaya Jomtien Beach is a family-owned estate set on 6.4-hectares at Tawanron Beach, between popular holiday spot of Jomtien and Bang Saray fishing village.

Owner Narit Chia-Apar and his son, Chintat Chia-Apar, are overseeing the US$150 million transformation project, which is being led by architecture firm A49.

7 things I wish I'd known before taking a 13-hour sleeper train across Thailand. No food was sold on board and it's easy to get left behind between stops.

The 467-mile journey between Chiang Mai and Bangkok is one of the longest railway routes in Thailand. It takes more than 13 hours to cross the dense jungle in the northern province to reach the country's capital.

On a reporting trip to Thailand in late July, I traveled on a sleeper train for the first time. At around 5 p.m., I boarded the Special Express 14 train in Chiang Mai, the largest province in northern Thailand. More than 13 hours later, and after traversing across nine provinces and 18 train stations, I arrived in Bangkok on a bustling morning.

Since Thailand had just fully opened up to tourists on July 1, not all of amenities on the sleeper train and railway stations were back to normal. There was no food for sale on board, barely any stops on a 10-hour stretch of the trip, and no cell service or Wi-Fi for more than half the trip.

But it was a trip worth trying once — it allowed me to experience Thailand, a country I've visited many times, in a completely new way. Here are seven things I wish I'd known before traveling on the Special Express.

The 467-mile journey cut across dense jungle and nine provinces. I wish I'd brought more food on board and had booked a different cabin.

AirAsia Thailand launches Bangkok to Fukuoka flights October 12

Following suit of Thai Vietjet last month, AirAsia Thailand will launch direct flights from Bangkok to Fukuoka, Japan. The flights are scheduled to commence on October 12 and fly from Don Mueang International Airport, Bangkok’s secondary airport that caters to low-cost carriers like AirAsia.

To celebrate the launch, the airline is offering promotional fares on sale from now until August 28 for travel between the launch on October 12 and March 23 of next year. The fare is 4,928 baht for each direction, though BIG members pay 4,888 and flights booked on the AirAsia Super App will get 30 additional kilogrammes of free luggage when they book 20 kilogrammes.

Fukuoka is the largest city on Kyushu, the southernmost major island (excluding Okinawa) and the third largest in Japan, and serves as the second largest port outside of Yokohama near Tokyo. It is known as a more affordable alternative to Tokyo for holidays and the new flights will capitalize on the beautiful fall foliage, according to AirAsia Thailand’s Chief Executive Officer.

Food fair coming up in Phuket

The town of Kathu in Phuket is hosting a healthy food fair later this month. The seventh annual food fair and healthy market will take place from August 25-27.

The fair will include a cooking competition, a music competition from students, family running, and live music. There will also be free massages, free cat and dog sterilizations, free haircuts, and other fun activities.

The healthy food festival is just one of several of the island province’s fun events. Starting on August 23, Phuket’s Kata Beach will host the ‘Phuket Beach Festival‘. The festival is meant to boost Phuket’s surf tourism amidst Thailand’s ongoing monsoon season. It will last from August 23-28.

After Phuket’s tourism economy was plundered by Covid-19, the island’s food and fun festivals are a way to bring income back to local communities

Choice Hotels Asia-Pac partners with Soap Aid for eco-friendly rollout

Choice Hotels Asia-Pac has partnered with Soap Aid to rollout large format bathroom amenities across its Australian and New Zealand hotels.

The large format products will reduce singe use plastic use by as much as 83 percent per room, per year, or 7.8kg of plastic per room per year and reduce the cost of these amenities to hotels by almost 10%.

Choice Hotels Asia-Pac Director of Performance and Revenue Management, Anthony Stanley, said there was great enthusiasm from hotels within the group and their guests to remove single use amenities from rooms and replace them with high-quality products with a lesser environmental impact.

“We also see a growing demand for sustainable options among franchisees and their guests, who are eager to do their part in reducing plastic waste and choose more environmentally friendly accommodation options,” he said.

“We are excited to partner with Soap Aid and contribute to the great work they do around the world, and here in Australia,” he added.

Soap Aid is an Australian based charity committed to saving children’s lives through improved hygiene while positively impacting the environment. It collects and reprocesses soap bars from hotels, giving a reliable and safe source of critically needed soap to communities around the world.

Thailand still a favourite as Bangkok, Phuket, Samui top best holiday spots lists

BANGKOK – Government spokesman Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana said on Monday that Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha was overjoyed that Thailand remains a favourite destination for travellers.

The results were announced by the magazine in its inaugural “Asia’s Best Awards”.

Also included in the list of best cities was Chiang Mai at No 6, while Koh Phi Phi came in as the 9th best island in the region.

Travel + Leisure said its readers chose Bangkok for its warm smiles and spicy street food.

“If warm smiles, spicy street food, and feeling the wind in your hair as you glide through the city on a motorbike or tuk-tuk are appealing, Bangkok certainly hits the mark. If you prefer high-thread-count linen in your private-pool suites and Michelin-starred meals, the city also has you covered. Whether you’re just spending a night en route to the islands, using Bangkok as a hub for further exploration of Southeast Asia, or visiting for what we advocate should be a dedicated vacation in its own right, there is no shortage of options,” Travel + Leisure said.

“In addition to the sandy stretches of postcards and the buzz of Patong, Phuket is home to a wide range of neighbourhoods – do you want uber-luxury, beach club party vibe, local hipster, family-friendly, or yoga and detox? There is plenty of unique accommodation, outdoor activities, and attractions to explore on Thailand’s largest island. And wow, is Phuket Town coming into its own; take a day’s break from the beach for photogenic Sino-Portuguese architecture, and a thriving food and bev scene,” Travel + Leisure said.
