: "The Economic History of Singapore" by Keen Meng Choy and Ichiro Sugimoto presents a detailed account of the city-state’s evolving economic roles, from regional entrepôt in the fourteenth century, to colonial port city in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and finally to a global hub for trade, finance, and innovation today.

As the first comprehensive economic history of Singapore, this volume brings fresh insight into the enduring forces that have shaped the city-state’s development, and reflects on its economic future. It will be a valuable resource for students and researchers of Southeast Asian history and economics, as well as general readers interested in the making of modern Singapore.

It is almost time for the roundtable discussion on the Life and Work of Gerard Sasges, Associate Professor in the Department of Southeast Asian Studies at NUS.

A historian with a focus on Vietnam from 1900 to the present, Gerard published two acclaimed books with us: "It's a Living: Work and Life in Vietnam Today" captured the energy and struggle of the world of work in Vietnam, and "Hard at Work: Life in Singapore", with photographs by his wife Ng Shi Wen, offered "as good a glimpse of life as it really is in Singapore" (The Straits Times).
