Konstantin Duhovny is a haunted man. His father died when he was ten, and ghosts have been hovering around Kostya ever since. Kostya can’t exactly see the ghosts, but he can taste their favorite foods. Flavors of meals he’s never eaten will flood his mouth, a sign that a spirit is present. Kostya has kept these aftertastes a secret for most of his life, but one night, he decides to act on what he’s tasting. And everything changes.

Kostya discovers that he can reunite people with their deceased loved ones—at least for the length of time it takes for them to eat a dish that he’s prepared. He thinks his life’s purpose might be to offer closure to grieving strangers, and sets out to learn all he can by entering a particularly fiery ring of Hell: the New York culinary scene. But as his kitchen skills catch up with his ambitions, Kostya is too blind to see the catastrophe looming in the Afterlife. And the one person who knows Kostya must be stopped also happens to be falling in love with him.

Set in the bustling world of New York restaurants and teeming with mouthwatering food writing, Aftertaste is a whirlwind romance, a heart-wrenching look at love and loss, and a ghost story about all the ways we hunger—and how far we’d go to find satisfaction.

“When a cat, who is a picture of grace and beauty, suddenly rolls over in a hideous posture, contorts his face and scratches his ear, he is telling you, sir, to go to blazes!”

The First Book in the “The Cat Who…” Series…

Jim Qwilleran, a once-successful reporter trying to rebuild his career, lands a job as a feature writer covering the local art scene for the Daily Fluxion. He becomes acquainted with George Bonifield Mountclemens, the newspaper’s harsh and widely disliked art critic, who lives with his intelligent cat, Koko, in an elegant house located in a deteriorating neighborhood. Mountclemens offers Qwilleran a cheap apartment in his building, and Qwilleran suspects the arrangement will involve helping care for Koko.

As Qwilleran settles into his new role, he learns about the local art community, including a gallery owned by Earl Lambreth. The gallery features works by several artists favored by Mountclemens, such as the mysterious Italian painter Scrano, the unconventional “Thingist” artist Nino, and Lambreth’s talented wife, Zoe.

The story takes a dark turn when Zoe discovers her husband stabbed to death in the gallery after closing hours. Soon afterward, guided by Koko’s unusual behavior, Qwilleran finds Mountclemens murdered as well, his body lying on the patio behind his home. Faced with two connected killings, Qwilleran becomes drawn into uncovering the truth behind the crimes.

“Your world, I imagine, is much like mine. A house, a garden. Children playing, outgrowing their clothes, requiring food and lessons and comfort. A familiar world, a joyful world, but a small one. Our horizons are tapestries or garden walls. But our husbands’ worlds … I cannot even begin to imagine their vastness, their beauty. All that perilous, intoxicating mystery.”

Designed and photographed entirely herself, ‘Vaghaar’ is a celebration of family and creativity; the essence of the food she grew up with.

The Foreign Student is the story of a young Korean man, scarred by war, and the deeply troubled daughter of a wealthy Southern American family.

In 1955, a new student arrives at a small college in the Tennessee mountains. Chuck is shy, speaks English haltingly, and on the subject of his earlier life in Korea he will not speak at all. Then he meets Katherine, a beautiful and solitary young woman who, like Chuck, is haunted by some dark episode in her past. Without quite knowing why, these two outsiders are drawn together, each sensing in the other the possibility of salvation.

Moving between the American South and South Korea, between an adolescent girl’s sexual awakening and a young man’s nightmarish memories of war, The Foreign Student is a powerful and emotionally gripping work of fiction.

For centuries, India has enthralled westerners looking for an exotic getaway, a brief immersion in yoga and meditation, or in rare cases, a true pilgrimage to find spiritual revelation. Justin Alexander Shetler, an inveterate traveler trained in wilderness survival, was one such seeker.

In his early thirties, Shetler quit his job at a tech startup and set out on a global journey: across the United States by motorcycle, then down to South America, and on to the Philippines, Thailand, and Nepal, in search of authentic experiences and meaningful encounters, while also documenting his travels on Instagram. His enigmatic character and magnetic personality gained him a devoted following who lived vicariously through his adventures. But the ever restless explorer was driven to pursue ever greater challenges, and greater risks, in what had become a personal quest - his own hero’s journey.

In 2016, he made his way to the Parvati Valley, a remote and rugged corner of the Indian Himalayas steeped in mystical tradition yet shrouded in darkness and danger. There, he spent weeks studying under the guidance of a sadhu, an Indian holy man, living and meditating in a cave. At the end of August, accompanied by the sadhu, he set off on a “spiritual journey” to a holy lake - a journey from which he would never return.
