The beauty of a Spent Baetis Rhodani lies in the fact that it shouldn’t look alive.

This pattern imitates a mayfly at the very end of its life cycle — drifting lifeless in the surface film, with wings flat and a slender, motionless body. It’s a subtle stage, but an incredibly important one.

During these spinner falls, trout often shift behavior. Instead of chasing moving insects, they begin feeding with remarkable precision, focusing on insects trapped in the surface.

This particular pattern, tied by FliesByAspeen is a great example of how small, thoughtful details can make all the difference. In the tutorial, he also shares some of his best tips for getting the proportions and presentation just right.

Baetis Rhodani is one of the first mayflies of the season, making this a pattern well worth having in your box from early spring and onwards.

Some flies just give you that feeling — this one will catch fish.

A slightly messy, lifelike caddis from Flies by Emet, designed to sit right in the surface film. CDC, elk hair and a subtle hot spot come together to create a fly that stands out just enough.

The hot spot might seem like a small detail but it’s often what breaks the pattern just enough to catch attention when fish turn selective.

The Scandinavian “Pitekläckaren”

The Pitekläckaren, tied by FliesByAspeen is a Scandinavian pattern with a slightly different look. Designed to sit low in the surface film, it creates a subtle, natural silhouette that can make all the difference when fish refuse more traditional patterns.

With carefully chosen materials and a touch of subtle flash, it’s the kind of fly you reach for when nothing else seems to work — a true out-of-the-box option.

Curious how it’s tied?

Floating Caddis

“Foam is King” truly fits this unsinkable caddis pattern.

Built to float, the foam body combined with Kapok dubbing makes it practically unsinkable.

Kapok is arguably one of the best materials for dry flies thanks to its outstanding floating ability. The legs are made from a blend of Kapok and Pure Squirrel Dubbing.

This is the kind of fly you tie on when the fish are active and you want the caddis to do the work.

Perdigon Nymphs

With their slim profile, heavy bead and coated body they cut quickly through the water to reach the fish where they hold. Minimalistic and compact - designed to reduce resistance. That’s exactly why they’ve become so popular.

But it all starts with the body.

Perdigon Skin makes it easy to create dense, smooth and durable bodies with a clean finish. The thin strips wrap neatly around the hook, while the subtle UV reflection adds just that extra touch of life beneath the surface.

Mojo Nymph Yarn

This thread combines wool and polyester in a way that gives both durability and a lifelike, natural appearance. The result is slim bodies with a slightly transparent finish that captures the subtle details of insects.

Easy to work with, especially on smaller flies, where it delivers a clean and realistic result every time. For us, it has become a favorite for dry flies, wet flies and nymphs.

Haven’t tried it yet? No worries — it’s available in several favorite colors in the shop.

Hare’s Ear

Some flies need no introduction. The Hare’s Ear is one of them.

A pattern that continues to deliver year after year. Simple at its core, yet endlessly adaptable to different waters, light conditions, and situations.

When a Hare’s Ear sits at the point of the leader, it’s rarely a bad choice. A timeless favorite that proves, time and again, why it always deserves a place in the fly box.

You’ll find more about the pattern in the Tying Corner. For more inspiration, check out FliesByAspeen.

Adult Caddis

Late summer evenings, when caddisflies hatch in numbers and the surface suddenly comes alive — that’s when the Adult Caddis truly gets to show what it’s made of.

A durable, high-floating fly that can handle multiple fish without losing its shape. A fly we return to time and time again when it matters, and one that holds a natural place in the fly box.

You’ll find more information about the fly in the Tying Corner, and don’t forget to check out FliesByAspeen who tied this pattern.
