Design Rehearsals – conversation about Bauhaus lessons • Which knowledge is to be trusted? How do we reconnect with materials? Is humankind still the “measure of all things”? In a time of crisis for the traditional educational canon and knowledge systems, the works of students taught by Josef Albers, László Moholy-Nagy, Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, Gunta Stölzl and Oskar Schlemmer illustrate their many-faceted exploratory movements towards creative expression in art and design. They are testimonials to the discrete and polyphonic realisations of the given tasks. They chronicle a constant flow between investigation and design: learning is materialised in form and Gestalt. In their range, responsiveness and open-endedness the works by the Bauhaus students offer insights into the dual process of unlearning and rediscovering their own creative potentials. The publication takes up the tradition of guest critiques, updated for the present day. International pedagogues, curators and designers study a selection of works and examine their contemporary relevance. / spread images via: /

Design Mass • What fulfills our world? Technology? Aesthetics? The industry rushes forth, developing new technologies that we are accordingly expected to acquire. Designers make these nice, like iPods and their friendly softness. Despite all of this: what do we really need? Beauty… technological extensions of our body… what do we need? Onomatopee invited three theoreticians to reconsider these questions. In the context of the Dutch Design Week, they will use the Onomatopee project space as their study. In here, they and the visitors brainstormed and developed ideas on these topics.

Design as Learning - A School of Schools Reader • Why do design? What is design for? These are forward-looking questions for a creative discipline that seems more slippery to define than ever. In a world of dwindling natural resources, exhausted social and political systems, and an overload of information there are many urgent reasons to reimagine the design discipline, and there is a growing need to look at design education. Learning and unlearning should become part of an on-going educational practice. We need new proposals for how to organise society, how to structure our governments, how to live with, not against, the planet, how to sift fact from fiction, how to relate to each other, and frankly, how to simply survive. .studio

Aneducarion - Documenta 14 • It attempts to introduce a chorus of voices that speak from different positions on aneducation, the education program for Learning from Athens, documenta 14 in Athens and Kassel. Instead of objectives and overviews, target groups and outcomes, successes or failures, the program was determined by process and experience. In thinking through the body it was possible to examine how we come together and recognize knowledge not as a one-way transmission but as a form of exchange that can be circulated.

aneducation aimed to complicate the politics of ‘knowing’ as institutional practice—namely, its genealogies and the power relations it imposes. It was not only about knowledge, but the daily embodied practices of listening, walking, gesticulating, performing, doing, reading, and being in dialogue with others. An open ecology was needed, and developed in conversation with artists, local publics, and associated organizations, drawing on many practices as processes for learning. This was realized in core questions concerning what shifts, drifts, and remains.

To Become Two - Propositions for Feminist Collective Practice • offers a narrative of artist Alex Martinis Roe’s research into a genealogy of feminist political practices in Europe and Australia from the seventies until today. These practices include those of the Milan Women’s Bookstore co-operative; Psychanalyse et Politique, Paris; Gender Studies (formerly Women’s Studies) at Utrecht University; a network in Sydney including people involved in the Sydney Filmmakers Co-operative, Feminist Film Workers, Working Papers Collective, and the Department of General Philosophy at Sydney University; and Duoda – Women’s Research Centre and Ca la Dona, a women’s documentation centre and encounter space in Barcelona. Drawing from their practices and experiences, Martinis Roe’s research forms a proposal for a transgenerational approach to feminist politics. This is further developed as a practical handbook of twenty new propositions for feminist collective practice, which were formed in collaboration with a network of contributors through experiments with these historical practices.
