After finishing Uni and starting working on my current job, I slumped very hard on my readings.
It took me so long to finish this book, but I finally did and I'm happy with that.
I feel like the more I mature, the better I understand Virginia's writing. Her stories are not to be read lightly, you really need to set yourself in London, 1920's, seeing things through the prespective of a woman not very content with life and bring your full focus to the table (at least for me).
From these short stories, I had previously read: The mark on the Wall and Lappin and Lapinova for High School. At the time, those meant nothing to me, but I saved this compilation to read other stories from her, because I assumed I just didn't fully understand them and Virginia deserved another try.
As of now, I really liked: The Legacy. It was the only one that kept me hooked until the end.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, J.K. Rowling (1997) 🇬🇧

It was my first time diving into this magical world.

I picked up this copy from my local library, it's the Bloomsbury Edition.

I will leave you with two of my favourite quotes from this 1st book (both from the wisest wizard himself, Dumbledore)

I always love to learn with books. Here's some notes I took on this beautiful one.

Love a chemical story (p. 104)

Stages:
1- Lust: testosterone + estrogen
2- Attraction: dopamine (pleasure hormone) + serotonin -» low levels of serotonin = people with OCD = couples who can't stop thinking about each other -> obsession
3- Attachment (long term bonding): oxytocin (released during or**sm and at childbirth; it makes two beings feel closer) + vasopressin (released postcoitally)

Hair, a korean american history (p.145)

South korean immigrants -» black hair care
1960- rise of popularity of wigs made with south korean hair in african american communities;
- The south korean government banned the export of raw hair;

Fate, a history (p.200)

O Último Cabalista de Lisboa, de Richard Zimler

Decorria o ano de 1506 (5266, segundo o calendário hebraico) e em Portugal as cerimónias da Páscoa judaica ficaram marcadas pela morte de milhares de cristãos-novos nas fogueiras de Lisboa.
Acompanhamos a história de um jovem judeu, Berequias (ou Pedro, nome cristão) Zarco, que ao encontrar o seu tio assassinado na cave de sua casa, parte à descoberta do culpado.
O enredo é passado com Berequias a seguir as pistas que lhe permitirão desvendar o mistério do assassinato do seu tio, o conceituado mestre cabalista Abrão Zarco.

Curiosidades que aprendi com este livro:

1. A cabala é uma corrente de pensamento/escola judaica voltada para o estudo do místico, espiritual e oculto.

2. As alheiras foram inventadas pelos judeus, para dissimular a sua verdadeira identidade. Na época, os cristãos faziam enchidos com carne de porco e deixavam-os à porta de casa a secar. Uma vez que os judeus não comem carne de porco, inventaram este enchido de mistura de carnes de aves e pão, para assim passar por um enchido de carne de porco e, por sua vez, passarem por cristãos.

3. Após a expulsão de 1492, os judeus passaram a chamar-se de “cristãos-novos” e, num tom pejorativo, de “marranos”. Os “marranos” eram os judeus convertidos à força pelos reinos católicos da Península Ibérica.

Por último, ao longo do livro lembrei-me várias vezes da mini-série da Netflix, "Unorthodox''. É passada numa época e contexto diferentes do livro e é conduzida por uma perspectiva feminina. É muito boa e serve também para nos dar mais um insight da cultura judaica.

O meu conto favorito foi "O Poço e o Pêndulo". Também gostei bastante d' "O Gato Preto", mesmo apesar de ter alguns triggers relacionados com crueldade animal.

Todos estes contos têm elementos macabros, mas lembrem-se que o estilo do E.A.Poe é mesmo assim, não fosse ele o mestre da literatura gótica. E é exatamente por esse motivo que gosto das suas histórias.
