Books' Planet

Books' Planet Used English books for sale, mainly crime fiction, mystery and thrillers Welcome to Books’ Planet, my used books shop/page on Facebook. Hope you enjoy!

The idea came about because I needed to find more shelf room for new books and also to raise some funds to purchase said books. So, in a sense, the idea is to recycle: As a business venture this one is doomed from the get-go as I will at some point (hopefully) run out of books to sell but also because I’ve paid for them twice or thrice (sic) as much as I will -eventually- be getting for them…But

the idea is to have some fun, make new contacts and give some use to my otherwise sadly wasted graphics skills: all imagery on this page (except of course for the book pics) is the craftsmanship of yours truly. Just one final note to say that even though the choice of english as the main language seems logic to match the vast majority of books you will find here and therefore the target audience, Portuguese is most welcome for your posts or messages. There will be also some portuguese books for sale.

Hi Everyone! It’s been a long while since I last posted anything but, every time I see that someone has visited this page I feel guilty for my procrastination (lack of time mostly) and I feel it’s my duty to update it. Speaking of books, here’s what I’ve just read: ‘The Exchange’ by old John Grisham, whose novels I used to enjoy and have already mentioned in the past. I don’t know if it’s me who has changed but this last story by the ‘king of courtroom drama’ feels like rubish; a long boring description of the kidnapping of a young lady lawyer by a group of unknown Libyan terrorists…not nearly as exciting as it may sound, mostly because the whole story evolves around the usual top class attorneys trying to negotiate a ransom. Just to wrap it up: My opinion is that many ‘consecrated’ novelists, at some point begin publishing books ‘by the yard’ as sales are more or less guaranteed, never mind the inspiration or creativity. It is, for instance, the case of Dan Brown (Robert Langdon and the Vatican saga) whose latest title, The Secret of Secrets’ I’m yet to read, without any real expectation of proper new thrills. Thanks for bearing with me and keep on reading! 👍

To restart the activity of this page, I would like to share with you one of my latest reads: A Promised Land, by Barack Obama. To keep it short, I’ll say it is - mostly for historic reasons - a must read. Also available in Portuguese (Uma Terra Prometida - isbn: 9789897841354, da ed. Objetiva) is more than just an account of the eight years of the Obama administration, between 2008 and 2016. It is a very honest and real assessment of the struggles and dilemas that an exceptionally talented and well meaning world leader can face, particularly when he is an afro-american and a Democrat...

Colson Whitehead is a name I have only recently heard of, but now that I have I won't likely forget because his writting style and his imagination are something to behold. While not qualified to write book reviews, I can tell you this much: Each one of his sentences is wrapped up in multiple levels of meaning and I, for one (even though that is hardly news) have sometimes to stop and re-read before I can work out the full significance and reach of any given passage. The other thing that immediately stands out is that the author is a staunch defensor of the minorities and the oppressed and that is obviously another plus for me. I'll leave you with the pics of covers & respective backs where hopefully you will be able to read a little sinapse of each story, both of them wonderfully creative, thrilling, unexpected...What can I say?😀

It's been a while since we last updated this page...sorry about that. You see, we were very close to giving it up altogether because there is hardly time enough for all our other chores but... (and there is always some 'but') our sheer joy in reading - and the will to share it - remains pretty much alive so, here's a couple of suggestions based on our most recent forays through the vast fields of contemporary american fiction. Hope you enjoy the tips and pls remember that now that the commercial venture (selling of 2nd hand books) has been definitely put aside, sharing or borrowing are still an option 😃

Same as before, another Philip Kerr title, of the 'Bernie Gunther' Series. Actually this one comes before 'The Man without breath'. Same price range, same condition. If you would like to have the two of them I'll round off the price:-)

Philip Kerr is my most recent discovery as far as great crime/fiction/thriller authors are concerned. After reading his title 'Research' (also available here) I went out looking for his other novels and I found he had this Bernie Gunther series. I'm not up to the task of giving you an evaluation of his writing style and creativity but you can easily find the proper reviews if you google it.
Personally, I'll read whatever he comes up with great gusto:-)

BTW: The book is in mint condition and was bought the other day at FNAC for €16. You can have it for €6 (no stamps included)

'Fatherland' is a work of fiction by Robert Harris that portrays the apocalyptic future that would have been if the Allies had lost World War II. Based on this book, there is a similarly titled series on TV, can´t remember the channel...Great book, brand new.

Try to imagine: Jamaica, lots of pot (obviously) and other stuff, hot women (naturally), CIA spies mixed with the reggae and rock stars we all know and a potentially explosive political situation. This book defies the wildest imagination but mind you, it is not easy to read, not just because of the rasta slang but also because of all the metaphors. This title was winner of the Man Booker Prize but it is 'no book for no bombocloth white boy', you feel me man?'

In the 1st place I need to apologize to everyone who liked this page, for the absence of activity & updates but the truth is, I've lost some of the initial drive not just because I had little feedback but also for the sheer lack of time. Nevertheless, my taste for good readings and all the books for sale or trading they all remain intact. As a matter of fact I'll begin posting right away!

If you think (like many people do) that Moby Dick is a story for kids, then let me tell you: you are well mistaken my friend, because even though this is a classic that has been labeled as juvenile literature, it is in fact an epic novel written in a formal, almost archaic english which can sometime pose a challenge to interpret, particularly if one’s first language is not English.

Captain Ahab’s character is also quite complex and well beyond a simple classification as villain or hero. But the long story is the book, not our opinion, so you should just read it!
