Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has strongly criticized Donald Trump for allowing a temporary waiver on sanctions for Russian oil exports. According to Zelensky, the move could provide Russia with up to $10 billion in additional revenue, potentially strengthening Vladimir Putin and prolonging the ongoing Russia–Ukraine War.

The decision came as global oil prices surged following escalating tensions and conflict in the Middle East. Global oil prices have dropped sharply after President Donald Trump suggested that the war in the Middle East could end soon. Brent crude, which had surged to $119.50 per barrel, has now fallen dramatically to around $89.75. In most countries, such a significant decline in international oil prices would quickly translate into relief for consumers through lower fuel prices.

However, the situation in Pakistan appears very different. Despite the global drop in crude oil prices and the arrival of new oil shipments, petrol prices in the country remain extremely high at Rs. 321 per liter. Instead of benefiting from the falling global market rates, ordinary citizens continue to face mounting financial pressure.

High fuel prices do not only affect transportation; they also drive up the cost of food, goods, and basic services. As a result, the economic burden on households continues to grow. Many citizens are now questioning why the benefit of declining global oil prices has not been passed on to the public.

Pakistan has increased petroleum prices by Rs55 per litre, and while the burden is already heavy on ordinary citizens, the financial impact on government spending is also expected to rise sharply.

According to official estimates, Pakistan already spends Rs60–70 billion every year on fuel and maintenance for government vehicles. With the latest hike in petrol and diesel prices, these costs could increase by another 20–25%, placing further pressure on federal and provincial budgets.

Government fleets across the country include tens of thousands of vehicles. Punjab alone operates nearly 30,000 official vehicles, costing about Rs20 billion annually, while the federal government manages between 12,000 and 15,000 vehicles, with fuel expenses around Rs9 billion per year. Sindh runs around 20,000 vehicles with Rs13 billion in fuel costs, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa operates over 12,500 vehicles costing about Rs7 billion annually, and Balochistan maintains around 8,000 vehicles, spending more than Rs4 billion on fuel each year.

Officials say the rising cost of petroleum may force governments to introduce cost-control measures, such as reducing the use of official vehicles. However, despite proposals from provinces like Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, no formal policy has yet been implemented.

As fuel prices continue to climb, the debate grows louder: should governments cut luxury transport expenses before passing the burden on taxpayers?
