The treacherous roads of the Karakoram

While the Himalayas are famous for their snow peaked mountains and gorgeous trails, the Karakoram Range in northern Pakistan is considered rough and dusty.

The trails are known to be treacherous, steep and crumbly, with steep drops pulmetting straight into a raging river.

The locals build rickety bridges of wood and steel, which sway under each step. In some areas, bridges don't last, so trekkers need to climb and descend entire mountains to get to their destination.

It is a hostile environment. One that shakes your perception of trekking in the mountains.

But a warm cup of tea in one of the communal huts built by locals for any traveller traversing the same path - restores ones faith in the karakoram. The mountains may be treacherous, but the warm hospitality and brotherhood of fellow travellers transforms that perception back into what it really is : an ultimate adventure for all trekking enthusiasts.

Dagri Forest 🌿🌳🌴🍃🍂🍀

Tucked away in the middle of a dense forest, lie the remains of a colonial-era bungalow that was built by the British in the 1800s. It’s called Dagri Bangla.
Walking towards Dagri, one can understand why the British chose this area to build a little sanctuary for themselves. Surrounded by thousands of trees, dense vegetation, and the beautiful sounds of birds, squirrels and woodland creatures, Dagri offers a unique seclusion that city dwellers can only dream of.

Part of the reason why this is so, is because the route to Dagri is only accessible via foot or horses 🐎 Trekking enthusiasts enjoy making the 13 km or so journey through the forest to reach the bungalow, where many spend the night. The bungalow is not functional, so water, food, or even toilets are not available. It’s an opportunity to enjoy the nature – the natural way.

If you plan to visit Dagri Bangla, pack in your camping equipment, and take plenty of food and water with you. While it does not completely disconnect you from modern life (phone signals and 4G works), it does zip you back into the beauty and rawness of nature that many city-dwellers crave to experience.

One of the most wholesome experiences one can get when travelling in Pakistan is a meal with the locals.

Pakistani people are known world over for their hospitality, and they would go any length to accommodate guests. They would serve their best food, and hand over gifts without any regards to their own needs.

Here at Avgarch, one of the locals graciously opened his home for us to get warm at. He served us delicious tea, along with a traditional bread that is so packed with nutrients that it served as the perfect energy booster for our hike back.

His generosity will always stay with us.

Sailing Fish Farm 🐟🐠🐡

Tucked away across the river in Khaplu lies a beautiful fish farm called Sailing. Surrounded by towering mountains, the fish farm offers fresh trout, which you can pick out yourself with a fishing rod. If you're hungry, they will cook it for you too.

There are three ways the trout is cooked: Grilled, Fried and Seared. All three variants are delicious.

If you enjoy history, there is another side of Sailing that many people don't know about. Directly above the fish farm, on the mountain rock face, are some ancient carvings of Budha, which are only accessible via a tricky uphill climb on sleet and crumbling rocks. The carvings are faint, but very much there. They run the risk of disappearance if restorative work is not done.
