A message in our inbox asked how to develop a patina technique on brass to resemble the attached photo.

The photo is a close up of a Tiffany lamp base. Here is our answer...

The easiest way to begin to develop the patina you want is to use ferric nitrate for the base.
This will give you a chocolate brown. The amount of time you leave the solution on will determine how dark the base color is.

The reddish brown step is achieved with ferric nitrate and ferric chloride.
Using various ratios of these will give you a redder or browner look.
This is where experimenting on scrap brass becomes important. Just keep careful notes on the proportions you use until you find a base color that appeals to you. I like using a 2x2 square of metal and make a notation on the ratios just like paint swatches.

There are a variety of different greens, blue-greens and green-blues to achieve the finished look that you’re after.

Again you can experiment with different proportions of the chemicals.
There is no right or wrong recipe or ratio, just what is appealing to you.

The way to apply the chemicals is dictated by the surface of your piece.
You can spray the solution on or use different materials such as paper towels, Saran Wrap, sponges etc. to give a stippled look to it.
Or alternatively you can use a sponge brush to give it a more uniform look.
