The Status of Parents β A Mercy We Often Realize Too Late
Parents are one of the greatest blessings Allah gives us in this world. Before we knew how to speak, they understood our cries. Before we could walk, they carried us. Before we could stand on our own, they stood for us.
Their love is not temporary. It is constant. It is patient. It is selfless.
In the Qurβan, Allah places kindness to parents immediately after the command to worship Him alone:
βYour Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him, and that you be kind to parents.β
(Qurβan 17:23)
This shows the incredible rank and importance of parents in Islam. Serving them is not just kindness β it is an act of worship.
The Silent Sacrifices of Parents
A mother carries her child in weakness upon weakness. She sacrifices her sleep, her comfort, her body, and often her dreams. She feels your pain before you say a word.
Allah reminds us:
βHis mother carried him in weakness upon weaknessβ¦β
(Qurβan 31:14)
A father, too, carries heavy responsibilities. He works, worries, protects, and provides β often silently. Many fathers love deeply but express it through actions rather than words.
Parents make sacrifices their children may never fully understand until they become parents themselves.
The Reward of Honoring Parents
The Prophet ο·Ί taught us that being good to parents is among the greatest deeds in Islam.
When asked about the most beloved deeds to Allah, he said:
βPrayer at its proper time.β
Then he said,
βKindness to parents.β
(Sahih al-Bukhari & Sahih Muslim)
Imagine β after salah, one of the highest acts of worship is serving and honoring parents.
Another powerful reminder:
βParadise lies under the feet of mothers.β
(Ahmad, An-Nasaβi)
This means that serving, respecting, and caring for oneβs mother is a path to Jannah.
Speak to Them with Gentleness
Allah does not just command obedience. He commands gentleness.
βDo not say to them even βuff,β and do not repel them, but speak to them a noble word.β
(Qurβan 17:23)
Even a small expression of frustration is discouraged. This teaches us patience, mercy, and humility.
As parents grow older, they may become more dependent. Just as they were patient with us when we were helpless, we must be patient with them.
Never Stop Praying for Them
One of the most beautiful duas in the Qurβan is:
βMy Lord, have mercy upon them as they raised me when I was small.β
(Qurβan 17:24)
This dua reminds us of our childhood β when we were completely dependent on them.
Praying for parents is a continuous act of love. Even after they pass away, our prayers and good deeds can continue to benefit them.
A Gentle Reminder
One day, their seat at the table may be empty.
One day, their voice may only exist in memories.
One day, we may wish for one more conversation.
Value them while they are here.
Call them.
Sit with them.
Listen to their stories.
Make dua for them every day.
Honoring parents is not optional in Islam β it is a path to Allahβs pleasure and to Paradise.
May Allah grant us the ability to serve our parents with sincerity, forgive our shortcomings toward them, and shower them with mercy in this world and the next.
Ameen.
