During the reign of the Fatimid Caliph-Imam al-Hakim, it was a Ramadhan custom for women to accompany a young boy at night. The boy would walk ahead of the woman with a lantern to announce her presence. In modern Cairo, the fanous have been integrated into number of local traditions. For example, during the holy month, children walk the streets with their lanterns, singing merrily while asking for gifts and sweets.
