In 1997, scientists discovered a coelacanth in Philippine waters—only the second known population in the world after Africa’s.
These rare “living fossils” were thought to have gone extinct 66 million years ago alongside the dinosaurs, until a living specimen stunned the scientific community in 1938.

The Philippine coelacanth population is genetically distinct from the African one, meaning they have been evolving separately for millions of years. They live in deep waters off Mindanao, rarely seen by humans, and can grow up to 2 meters long—with lobed fins resembling early amphibians that first crawled onto land.
