Noong Disyembre 30, 1896, dinala si Jose Rizal mula Fort Santiago patungong Bagumbayan, kung saan siya hinarap sa firing squad. Tumanggi siyang takpan ang kanyang mga mata at ipinuwesto nang nakatalikod sa mga sundalo.

Sabay-sabay siyang pinaputukan, at sa kabila ng tama, pilit niyang inikot ang katawan upang mamatay nang nakaharap sa langit. Namatay si Rizal sa edad na 35, nag-iwan ng matinding alaala sa kasaysayan ng Pilipinas.

Matatagpuan ang pinagbagsakan n'ya mismo sa loob ng Chinese Garden ng Luneta Park, tinatawag na ito ngayon bilang 'Martyrdom of Dr. Jose P. Rizal'.
