“Spider plants (Chlorophytum comosum) earned their reputation as natural air cleaners thanks in part to a well-known NASA study, which showed they could strip out pollutants like formaldehyde from sealed chambers—up to 95% within 24 hours. The same research also noted reductions in mold spores and bacteria, pointing to their potential beyond just aesthetics.
In practice, though, the effect is more modest. Real homes aren’t sealed labs, and achieving NASA-level results would require a jungle’s worth of spider plants alongside regular watering and care. Still, even at smaller scales, they can modestly improve air quality while adding greenery to a room, blending science with a touch of nature indoors.
