Nuestra Señora de la Solidad de San Isidro (Nueva Ecija)

The image of the miraculous patroness of the town of San Isidro is that of a 19th century work, depicting the grieving Blessed Virgin Mary in her solitude after the Crucifixion and death of her Son Jesus. The images was painted on wood, enclosed in an ornate solid-silver frame. It is Mary e from the instruments of torture, the painting is embellished by gold and silver appliques – the Holy Spirit, angels, virgin’s golden rostrillo, her cloak with its silver lining and metal stars, silver boat-like pillow, a letter “V” and a galleon.

The elaborate silver frame done in baroque, depict vines, leaves and flowers. Within this frame is a faded, crimson velvet background with silver miniatures of an empty cross, two ladders, nails and hammer. Also shown are an angel holding a chalice, Veronica’s veil with 3 faces of Christ, a reed, a man in priestly robes, a spear, a pitcher (Pilate), a rooster and key (St. Peter), a pillar (scourging), a sponge on a pole, and eyes (probably an ex-voto given in thanksgiving for restored sight.)

This is not Intramuros but San Isidro in Nueva Ecija, once part of Pampanga. San Isidro was formerly known as Factoria, for the huge to***co processing factory (photo, taken in 1904) that flourished at the height of the To***co Monopoly—when the Spanish colonial government confined the cultivation of to***co to Nueva Ecija, Cagayan Valley, the Ilocos Region and Marinduque (no other provinces were allowed to grow to***co). The whole enterprise became so profitable it lasted 100 years (1782-1882), extended Spanish rule in the colony for at least another century, and made the Philippines one of the world’s top to***co exporters. San Isidro became so prosperous it was made the capital of Nueva Ecija starting 1850 and the capital of the Philippines in 1899.

Unfortunately, the prosperity came with a price: government agents underpaid the farmers, and the farmers were not allowed to grow other crops on their own land for their own families, forcing them to resort to smuggling and bribery.

It also popularized smoking among Filipinos, the effects of which have lasted to this day.

It was in San Isidro where the local revolt against Spain occurred, making Nueva Ecija one of the eight provinces immortalized in the Philippine flag. It was also in the area where the HUKBALAHAP was born.

EPIFANIO DE LOS SANTOS (EDSA)
(April 7, 1871 - April 18, 1928)

EPIFANThree decades after his death, his country honored him by naming after him the 20-kilometer avenue now known as Epifanio de los Santos Avenue, popularly known as EDSA.

Epifanio de los Santos was born on April 7, 1871 in Malabon, Rizal. His father, Escolastico of Nueva Ecija was a wealthy haciendero, while his mother Antonina Cristobal y Tiongco was a musician and beautiful harp player.

Epifanio de los Santos was a District Attorney of San Isidro, Nueva Ecija. He was later elected as Governor of Nueva Ecija in 1902 and 1904. His election victory made him the first democratically elected provincial governor and head of the Federal Party in Nueva Ecija. After his term as provincial governor, he was appointed Fiscal of Bulacan and Bataan.

The last and most significant position he held was Director of the Philippine Library and Museum in 1925.

He died in office on April 18, 1928. The Philippine government paid him a tribute to a stately funeral. Local and foreign scholars lamented to a loss what has been described by them as "Great among the Greatest Filipino Scholars."

Epifanio de los Santos's first wife was Dona Ursula Paez of Malabon. They had four children namely, Jose who became a historian, biographer, and collector; Rosario, Escolastico, and Antonio.

With his second wife, Margarita Torralba of Malolos, Bulacan, they had eight children namely Leticia, Fernando, Socrates, Federico, Hipatia Patria, Espacia Lydia, Glicera Ruth, and Margarita. Socrates became a leading Pentagon Aeronotics engineer.
