I had a discovery call with a potential client today.
She sounded hesitant the moment we started talking. She was polite, but I could feel the doubt in her voice.
And then she said itâ "I hired someone from the Philippines before, and it didnât go well."
It hit different. đ„ș
I knew what was coming next. She shared how she hired a VA who seemed perfect on paper. Someone who promised they could do everything, said all the right things during the interview, made it seem like they were experienced.
But when it was time to deliver?
They had no idea how to use the tools. The client ended up losing money, time, and trust.
And now, here I was, trying to convince her to trust again.
Trying to prove that not all Filipino VAs overpromise. That not all of us fake our skills. That some of us actually work hard, actually learn, and actually care. đ«¶đŒ
That call reminded me of something important.
The hardest part of being the next VA to a client whoâs been burned before isnât the interviewâitâs rebuilding their trust.
Itâs convincing them that not all VAs are the same. That you are different. That you can actually do the work, that you wonât disappear, that you wonât fake it.
And to every aspiring VA reading thisâplease donât be that VA who fakes it till they make it. đđŒ
Yes, confidence is important.
Yes, we learn as we go.
But do not overpromise. Do not pretend you know something just to get hired.
Because when you fake it, itâs not just you who suffers. Itâs the client who gets scammed. Itâs the next VA who has to fight harder just to prove they are worthy of trust.
If you donât know how to use a tool, say so. If you donât have experience, be honestâbut show that youâre willing to learn.
Because clients donât just hire skillsâthey hire integrity.
Today, I gave my best to reassure her. I explained my process, my skills, my experience. I told her, âI wonât make promises I canât keep, but I will deliver on the ones I do.â
By the end of the call, she said, âI appreciate your honesty. That makes a big difference.â
She hasnât decided yet. But I know one thingâI didnât lose this client because of trust. And I will never be the reason another VA has to fight for it.
So if youâre starting in this industry, earn your success the right way.
Your skills will grow, your experience will come, but trust? Once you break it, itâs hard to rebuild. đ€
Donât fake it till you make it. Learn it till you make it. Thatâs how you win.
