“NOEL” BY J. R. R. TOLKIEN

Grim was the world and grey last night:
The moon and stars were fled,
The hall was dark without song or light,
The fires were fallen dead.
The wind in the trees was like to the sea,
And over the mountains’ teeth
It whistled bitter-cold and free,
As a sword leapt from its sheath.

The lord of snows upreared his head;
His mantle long and pale
Upon the bitter blast was spread
And hung o’er hill and dale.
The world was blind,
the boughs were bent,
All ways and paths were wild:
Then the veil of cloud apart was rent,
And here was born a Child.

The ancient dome of heaven sheer
Was pricked with distant light;
A star came shining white and clear
Alone above the night.
In the dale of dark in that hour of birth
One voice on a sudden sang:
Then all the bells in Heaven and Earth
Together at midnight rang.

Mary sang in this world below:
They heard her song arise
O’er mist and over mountain snow
To the walls of Paradise,
And the tongue of many bells was stirred
in Heaven’s towers to ring
When the voice of mortal maid was heard,
That was mother of Heaven’s King.

Glad is the world and fair this night
With stars about its head,
And the hall is filled with laughter and light,
And fires are burning red.
The bells of Paradise now ring
With bells of Christendom,
And Gloria, Gloria we will sing
That God on earth is come.

To celebrate Human Rights Day 2023, Liwanag Kyusi (LK) is partnering with Philippine Human Rights Information Center (PhilRights) in the launch of another flagship program of LK — Masinsinang Usapan (MU), an educational caravan and gift-giving project.

MU is a transformative initiative dedicated to providing essential informational talks, resources, and support to teens and young adults. Credible and respected resource persons will facilitate educational talks about current and relevant social issues followed by an open forum and distribution of Liwanag kits. Our goal is to empower and equip these young individuals with the knowledge and tools they need to make informed decisions, prioritize their well-being, and flourish in all aspects of their lives. This project is driven by the belief that every young person deserves access to accurate and comprehensive information, regardless of their background or circumstances.

The participants of this Sunday's MU are high school and college students from Solidarity with Orphans and Widows (SOW). Meanwhile, a Libro at Laruan Para sa Kabataan (LLK) session will also be conducted for the elementary pupils of SOW.

MU and LLK are sponsored by Ate Rica's Bacsilog, NFB Builders, www.thegreentraveler.net, and Book Cellar Ph. It will be held at 9:00AM on Sunday, 10 December at the 3rd floor of Ina ng Lupang Pangako Parish Hall, Brgy. Payatas, Quezon City.

Happy 440th birthday to Juliet! 💐

Juliet is one of the few Shakespearean characters whose birthday we know precisely.

Shakespeare writes in a conversation between Lady Capulet and Juliet's Nurse in Act I, Scene 3: "On Lammas-Eve at night shall she be fourteen." Psst ... that's today!

To celebrate, here's a throwback to 2016 when the famous balcony scene was recreated in our Mitchell Library Reading Room.

Shakespeare is back in the building again with our free exhibition, For All Time: Shakespeare in Print.
