THE 1ST COMMANDMENT do really forbids the use of images. That is true. But not all "images" categorically gibawal kay naa man pod ta'y mabasa nga mga images nga gipapahimo sa Ginoo.

Dr. Norman Geisler and Thomas Howe, both prominent Protestant Bible Scholars, wrote:

"The prohibition in Exodus 20:4 is NOT AGAINST religious art as such. Rather, it was AGAINST using any image AS AN IDOL." (The Big Book of Bible Difficulties, p.84)

The fact nga naghimo gihapon ang mga Jews og mga images, despites sa gisugo na sila sa Ginoo sa Unang Sugo nga ibawal, nagpamatuod nga dili diay totally and absolutely gibawal ang tanang klase sa images kay most of our non-Catholic brethren assumes or presupposes nga ang Unang Sugo strikto nga nagbawal gayod sa paghimo'g mga imahen "of all kinds" or "in any forms"

So, as their conclusion, without exemptions, no matter what kind of images as long as images—it is absolutely forbidden—mao na'y stand nila against nato.

They do not mind what the Harper's Bible Dictionary says: "all idols are images but NOT all religious images are idols." (p. 276).

REALTALK!

The second point they presupposes here is: in the issue of initiation sa paghimo'g mga images. Matud nila, kon wala sugoa it means gibawalan na. Kay wala man sugoa ang mga Katoliko, so gibawalan ta.

Even though, ingnon nato, dili lagi Katoliko ang gisugo directly sa Ginoo ug specifically ang mga Israelita lamang ang gi-addressan sa maong mga imahena, this is still somewhat problematic in some cases simply because even in the Bible, naa man po'y mga personahe nga naghimo gihapon o nagbuhat gihapon even without God's direct command—So, nag-initiate.

Best example here is King David himself. He still build a Temple (daghang carving images ang sulod) and dedicated it for God but wala usab siya sugoa ni God (see 2 Sam 7).

2nd example was Queen Esther. The people of Israel at her time established a victory feast called "Purim" but, then again, without God's direct command (see Esther 8-9).

So these two nag-initiates but wala makalapas.

Even though wala ta'y New Testament verbatim apostolic command nga mohimo og images, why not the same initiation from the Old Testament may also be apply sa New?

After all, nakita naman ni Prophet Ezekiel sa iyang "vision" nga ang New Temple daghan kaayong mga larawan sulod niini (41:17-19). Unsa ning New Temple kaha? Catholic Church kaha ni? Only God knows.

Another point, it is absurd nga himoan natog images ang Dios while knowing nga He is essentially spirit (John 4:24).

In our Catholic theology, ang mga imahen nag-representar lamang, primarily, sa God-made-flesh Who is Jesus, wala irepresent ang images sa Dios in His nature as a spiritual being (Acts 17:29).

Tungod kay it is always impossible to represent His essence/nature in depictions. Tan-awa ragod ng Catechism of the Catholic Church #476-477, 1159).

The fact that Jesus, Who Himself God, "became man", so logically we can depict Him. Kay it is thru His humanity, we see our invisible God "in the flesh" (Col 1:15). Thru that humanity, we may depict the Incarnate God in images.

Thirdly, even the Early Christians worshipped in the Temple nga may mga larawan (1 Hari 6:29).

Basaha kining mga verses: Lk 24:52-53, Acts 2:46, 3:1-3,8, 5:21,42, 21:26, Matt 21:12-13,23, Mar 11:11,15-17,27, 12:35, Jn 2:14-17, 5:14, 7:14,28, etc).

And then in John 3:14, Jesus pointed to Himself ang image sa Bronze Serpent nga hinimo ni Moses AS IF mao na'y ga representar Niya as the foreshadowing of His death on the Cross.

Moingon pod sila'g atong mga images are not precise and accurate sa original Jesus kay wala pa man ta kakita ni Jesus personally.

YES but in the Bible, Jesus and His Apostles even recognized the image of Caesar in the coin used during sa ilang time (Mat 22:21). But we all know that images shown in coins are NOT ACCURATE or precise.

But did they criticized the image of Caesar?)

Ingon pod sila: "Pwede man ta mo-initiates as long as dili ta makalapas."

Yes saktrue! But it doesn't follows nga illegit na mogamit og images.

It will only becomes a fallacious argument if we contextualize nga "di nalang ta mo initiates kon duna'y 'danger' nga makalapas sa paggamit niini in the future"

Even in the Bible naa man po'y ga-initiates apan in the end na-failed man gihapon. Guess who? God Himself maigo—yes, He Himself FIRST initiates the use of images when He commanded Moses nga maghimo'g image sa Bronze Serpent aron kon kinsa ang motan-aw niini maluwas sa death (Num 21:7-9).

But thousand years later, in 2 Kings 18:4, the same image created by Moses and commanded by God Himself, is being worshipped by the Israelites.

Three questions here are now arises: nakalapas ba ang Ginoo ani dapita kay ni-initiates man Siya knowingly afterwards failed? If He knows very well the future nga mahitabo ni, so manong nag-initiates man Siya niana sauna?

Why God permits what He already forbids?

Bruce K. Waltke, another Protestant Scholar, wrote with same remarks:

"NO PROPHET ever condemned the Israelites for engaging in artistic pursuits and other biblical writers made NO MENTION of a proscription AGAINST FORMS and IMAGES. In practice the 2nd Commandment is NOT AGAINST ART. In theory, I would SUPPORT THE MAKING OF ICONS." (An Old Testament Theology: An Exegetical Canonical and Thematic Approach, p.417).

OTHER NOTES:

1. Daotan ba iprosesyon ang mga images? Dili.

UNSAY CONCLUSION?

BEFORE we judge the Catholic Church nga "unbiblical", we must first know unsa'y explanations niya kabahin sa isa ka doktrina.
