Adding a wash to the model really makes the details pop.
I used a mix of watercolors and AK pencils to get the color I wanted. Not too dark and not too light.

Wip update:
1 Canopy : Colored the widows with clear gloss to get a glass effect. 2 added a wash to the engines and body, after it dried I wiped off the excess with a cotton bud. There is more depth and detail that pop out during this process.

WiP log: I decided not to fully use the cockpit decals as they were hard to apply and I knew they would leave fold marks all over, but I would still use the black windows. So painting the cockpit I used a mix of 85% Neutral grey mixed with 15% royal blue. It has the same grey color as the engines btw. Then I carefully cut out the windows with a ruler and knife. I cut them a bit smaller than the edges so I could get the depth illusion on the model. Applied them carefully and did a test fit. I also used a knife to cut the side decals on the nose. Looking good so far! 🔥

wip update 🛠 I decided to use the yellow sticker decals that came with the kit. (Coz I thought painting and masking yellow would be a pain 😅) I cut out the sticker i needed seperately and carefully positioned it over the area of application. Once the sticker was softly over the area I used a cotton bud to burnish(or rub) the area to make all the details underneath pop out. A soft tipped tweezer was used to scribe out the panel lines to give the sticker more depth. A sharpened toothpick will work too! After this the yellow sticker for the engines were cut out with an xacto knife and carefully stuck into place. So far the stickers were very thin and easy to work with! Bravo to for the quality! Comments and questions welcome!

Quick update! On the engine and cockpit I decided to hand paint the grey color, (using a mix of neutral gray 75%+ white 20%+ 5% navy blue) since using the included stickers would be too hard to burnish and it would cover up too many details. The color didn’t match up 100% to the sticker colors but it was close enough to the IlM reference photos i used.

💨 🎨 Using an airbrush to paint the base color H21 Off White. The yellow tinge gives the ship a more aged and used look similar to the original paints used by The base color may seem a bit light compared to what you see on screen, that’s because the weathering process will still darken the ship when all the grime, soot and oil stains are applied. When painting on the base color I try not to fully cover all the dark pre-shading we did earlier to make the bright spots pop out more. Feel free to leave any questions in the comments below!

Doing some crossover work for 🛠 Some pre-shading action before the base paint. I might have sprayed on too much but hopefully I can counter it with the base coat. No primer this time. I used some light grey acrylics and some drops of black for the pre-shade. This snapped on pretty nicely. The only parts where ca glue was used was on the edge of the support pylons attaching to the disk vectrals toward the rear. Other than that everything assembled nicely.

WiP log: Tediously sanding off the small dimples and bumps at the back of the model caused by the supports. The primer coat helps show the imperfections, making it easier to distinguish during sanding. After another coat of primer I hope to paint on the base color. I wonder what color would look nice.. military green, gray, or beige? 🧐
