Frontiersmen of old would trade furs for fine quality blades, then fashion the handles out of oak, mulberry or the best material of all - deer antlers.

Antlers of whitetail deer or elk could be collected in the forest as the animals shed them yearly. These tools eventually became icons for frontiersmen and the old west in general.

Spotted horses, such as the Appaloosa and Pinto horses (actually piebald or skewbald Mustangs), were highly-prized by the Nez Perce, Comanche, Sioux and other mounted tribes - not just because they were pretty (they sure were!), but because the spots and contrast of colors acted as a crude form of camouflage, breaking up the horses' outlines from afar and making mounted raiders slightly harder to detect until it's too late.
