Flying lanterns have been around for generations and were used for several different things.Today, the Chinese sky lanterns are used to celebrate several occasions from large public events to personal, intimate get togethers. There may be some facts regarding sky lanterns that you are unaware of though. The top ten sky lantern facts are:
Sky lanterns are known by several different names including Chinese lanterns, flying lanterns and paper lanterns. They are used all over the world but are called slightly different variations on the name.
All sky lanterns are 100% biodegradable. As the fuel cell burns out an the Chinese lantern drifts to the ground it will not contribute to waste. Instead, once exposed to the elements it will degrade so there is no trace of it left.
Chinese lanterns are safe for use and if a few precautions are taken will not harm anyone or cause any damage. You should, however, make sure to supervise the launching of sky lanterns if they will be used with children.

What are sky lanterns?
Sky lanterns are floating lanterns made from rice paper with a bamboo frame containing a waxy combustible fuel cell. When the fuel cell is ignited it heats the air inside the sky lantern causing it to rise. The sky lantern is airborne for approximately 10 - 15 minutes or until the fuel cell is exhausted, after which the lantern floats back to the ground
Are they safe to use?
Sky lanterns are generally very safe to use,We supply full safety and release instructions and if these are followed then you can enjoy the magic of our sky lanterns
What restrictions apply?
Sky lanterns are not recommended for use in the rain, they are made from rice paper so are not best suited for rain.
Sky lanterns should not be released if the wind is too strong, please remember that the sky lantern is made from rice paper and can be misdirected very easily, recommended maximum wind speed = 10 mph / 17kph.
How do I use sky lanterns?
Upon arrival, gently remove the sky lantern from the box.
Holding the cross wires in the centre, spin around to insert air and slightly inflate the lantern.
With the lantern in the upside down position, see photo, place and attach the supplied fuel cell underneath the cross wires.
Hold the lantern in the upright position by the four corners, this may take more than one person, and light the fuel cell in a circular motion from underneath, taking care not to contact the lantern.
Once the fuel cell is fully alight, still holding the corners, gently lower the lantern almost to the ground. Wait until there is enough heat created for the lantern to want to rise, this may take a minute or so.
When the sky lantern begins to rise, take hold of the bamboo frame and the bottom and gently push the lantern skywards. Stand back and enjoy the magic of SKY LANTERNS.
Do they harm the environment?
Unlike most fireworks, sky lanterns are very environmentally friendly.
Is launch permission required?
In most cases, no, but it would be advisable to contact your local authorities including the coast guard, for advice on possible regulations.
What is the most appropriate launch site for the Sky Lanterns?
We recommend using Sky Lanterns in a clear open space free from obstructions, i.e. power cables, trees or buildings. For maximum visibility, a clear sky is preferable. Keep away from sites with flammable gases and liquids.
What are the suitable weather conditions for launching Sky Lanterns?
Best Conditions, for launching: Still weather conditions with little wind. A maximum wind force of 2 on the Beaufort scale (4 - 7 miles per hour) must not be exceeded at the time of launching the lanterns, due to the risk of the lantern flying off course.
We do not recommend using Sky Lanterns when it is raining. Light precipitation/drizzling may still allow Sky Lanterns to fly, but we strongly discourage using them in heavy downpours.
What can be used to write good luck wishes upon the Sky Lanterns?
For best results, we recommend using a large felt-tip pen on a flat, even surface, free from dirt and moisture. This is to ensure that the paper does not tear when written upon. To ensure best results minimal pressure should be applied.
How high do the Sky Lanterns fly, and for how long?
One Sky Lantern burns and flies for approximately 5 - 10 minutes, in optimal weather conditions, the Sky Lanterns can reach heights between 200m and 1000m
What happens once the fuel source has been exhausted?
Once the Fuel Cell has expired, there is no flame or fuel material left, so the lanterns float gently back to the Earth. Falling Lanterns with extinguished fuel cell pose no fire risk.
